    Chicken Buyers Remorse

I wouldn’t get any Orpingtons again. We have one BO left, have had a lavender and another BO and their very fluffy butts make for very poop encrusted butts. We have a SLO, Black Australorp, RIR, a barnyard mix and 2 Cream Legbars. I am most attached the Legbars, they are so pretty and gentle...

Why do I have chickens? Pets/Eggs Are they pets? Yes Do I have meat birds? No Do they free range? No, their covered yard takes up half of our backyard. We let them out occasionally when we can supervise. What breeds do I have? Buff Orpington Black Australorp Barnyard Mix Rhode Island Red...

Anyone else's chickens afraid of snow.

Our older chickens won’t step foot in the snow, they stay in the covered run. The sides are wrapped in plastic. The babies (2 Cream Legbar pullets) don’t mind the snow at all - first chickens we have ever had that will venture out into the evil white stuff lol!

    Looking for beautiful Breeds

I would definitely recommend Cream Legbars. They are so beautiful, and tolerate Illinois heat well. Haven’t wintered them yet as mine are just pullets, but I see no reason why they won’t do well. Please check them out, I think you will agree they are stunning!

What chicken breeds should I get??

I haven’t seen anyone mention Cream Legbars. I would recommend getting a couple of these. They are autosexed, have beautiful coloring and a cute crest. They lay gorgeous blue-green eggs too! Buff Orpingtons are great, the only issue we have ever had with them is their fluffy butts keep...

Something you wish had been invented in chicken keeping.

We live in Illinois, hot and humid here as well. Haven’t had any issues with the wood swelling or anything yet. Time will tell. So far we love it!

Something you wish had been invented in chicken keeping.

We have had for about 4 months, works great! We keep sand in it and just use a kitty litter scoop to clean it out every day.

No, we just built a new coop this spring and he designed it then. I will get pics today and post.

Something you wish had been invented in chicken keeping.

My husband made a “Poop Drawer” a drawer under the roosts that slides out to make cleaning easier. It is awesome!

    Silver Laced Wyandotte Gender

Wow, I didn’t know some of those breeds were a available with a rose comb! I have a mixed breed chicken that has a rose comb, but she didn’t have the laced feathers to further confuse me. I don’t think my SLW is going to nicely marked when she is an adult unfortunately. Didn’t know at the...

Thank you - big relief! I have never had trouble sexing a chicken before, but the more I looked at those feathers, the more deceiving they looked.
