She was sleeping last night, so I didn't get pics yet.
She has to go back out this weekend....we leave for a week long trip. I have someone coming daily to check on them and get eggs....but not to take care of a chicken in a box!
I might cave and put the heat back out there. I hate to do...
Hrm...that's a good point.
I had been giving them lots of the sunflower seeds in the past...but ran out and just haven't bought them again. I will pick some up tomorrow. Pics will be up in a few minutes.
I need some advice on one of my plucked hens!
We have 3 red sex link hens. They are all 18 months old. We got them at the same time, easter a year ago. They live in an elevated coop (deep litter) with an outdoor run (pea gravel and sand). No heat this year. (we did have a heat lamp last...
Re: Fairmont regulations....they are ridiculous. Your coop has to be 80 meters from any neighboring homes...which is about impossible in town. (When I got ours, I misread and thought it was 80 feet, which we are good on, but just barely).
Since I misread...and technically we were in...
Very cool. What does he teach? I got my degree from there.
I used to teach out in that area as well. (North Marion).
I would have serious country envy. We're casually looking at moving....but need to get closer to morgantown (which means more money for less house/land).
Hi all! I'm going to jump right in to the middle of your thread......
I've been posting on BYC since before we got our chickies last year. I'm definitely now a chicken addict! We have 3 RSL girls that we adore. (pics in link, sorry, i haven't uploaded anything to byc)...
The problem is that there's nothing you can DO to encourage or prevent eggs of that size. It's not like you can sit a hen down and say "Listen sweetie....we're very proud of you and your accomplishment....but we're worried that your over achievements might be detrimental to your health."
So...
Okay, that's pretty darn awesome.
The coop and run I mean (yes, they math is really neat too. but as i'm now 'landscaping' my coop, i've blown any shot i have at breaking even. plus, i can't bear to charge friends for the extra eggs, so i just give them away).
I would love to see more pics...
I think it's an altogether bad idea. In fact, anything you have to hide from your landlord (or neighbors, or city zoning/animal control) is a bad idea.
Personally, I can't imagine having chickens live indoors. We have 3 pet hens, love them to death....but they are messy girls! But if that's...
Resurrecting this thread with a few more questions....
Is there a risk of disease in using chicken litter as fertilizer? Obviously I watch too much House....but the episode with the boy that gets histoplamosis in his backyard because there used to be a chicken farm there years and years...
Just wanted to update this to say that we went before the zoning board Thursday night and received a variance. We were judged to be 'excellent stewards of our poultry'. It was a pretty funny experience as all the other cases were typical zoning things (adding on to churches, etc)
The also...
We only have 3 birds. The coop is small though, it's a coverted dog house.
There are pics here if they will help.

The winter mods include a plexiglass window for the front (door) window. The entire back 'staircase' area will be covered, top, back and...
My coop is movable. The original plan was to move it every week or so to give the girls fresh grass and not kill any yard.
But that turned out to be a big pain (though I now have some REALLY healthy sections of yard from the early experiments) and we put it on concrete with a sand floor of...
The hanging corn and cabbage is a great idea.
We also picked up a few hanging treat cages from the pet store. One is a ball with larger openings, one a square with smaller (so it keeps smaller things in better).
We'll put treats in there so they don't get all sandy and to vary up the routine...
We just went out to the coop and found FOUR eggs. We have three chickens.
Both the hubby and I checked for eggs last night before bed and found none. I even raked the coop to be sure one didn't get buried as they aren't laying in the nest box. There was nothing in there, I looked everywhere...
More like prison break really. I have ONE ornery hen who keeps escaping the yard.
Every day she finds a new way out, I find a solution to it...then she finds another one.
The other two are perfectly content to stay in the yard. They seem to realize that they're spoiled and pampered, safe...
Mine LOVE painted toenails of any color. Every time I repaint we have two days of them checking them out and tentitively giving a peck to be sure that they are indeed....still my toes.
My daughter REALLY wants to paint their toenails, but I'm thinking that will just start them pecking at each...
Well, another egg (slightly smaller, probably just a single yolk this time) in the homemade nest on the coop floor.
They've done nothing with that nest box other than look at it and take things OUT of it.
Cool. I'm going to stick with calling them Red Stars then. Just because I can't bring myself to say 'sex link' in front of my neighbors when they ask.
Beside, they pretty much are the stars around here lately. Everyone loves them and wants to see them...so it works for us.
