I have 3 thermometers, all of which hang between 98.5-100.5. I just ice tested and boil tested my sensitive meat probe thermometer. Ice bath it read 31.8 and my boil point should be about 209 it started boil 207.5 . meaning the mean adjustment should be around .85 of a degree.
It (at egg...
The Easter Hatch a long will be here before you know it! Now that the chaos of the Christmas season are basically behind us, the hatch fever prepping should begin :drool
I plan to buy or hatch 2-4 breeds this year. I want to hatch most in the Easter hatch along if possible. So, there are a few...
These pictures are rough, none were cooperating with me taking them. I think the tablet freaked them out because of its size lol But anyone wants to help me guess. From Comb size and color I have sexed guessed so far and have the pictures marked as my guesses. For fun, I checked out their wing...
Friend ws told he was some kind of Orpington, but I've never seen a barred orpington. He has Yellow legs so shouldn't be cuckoo maran. Weighs around 10lbs. Some rare breed or just a mutt or is this somehow an aggressive barred rock? Never known a Rock to be aggressive but anything's possible.
I joined the rare breed group of facebook and just purchased more eggs than I should lol :th
Anyone purchased and successfully hatched from this farm?
Just curious. Pictures looked like good stock from what they showed.
I'm considering getting some standard color Jumbo Coturnix Quail for some meat and eggs. I'm not really positive though. I hear they're hardy, pretty easy to clean/process and of course, they grow fast, but I am still hesitant. I'm used to chickens, ducks and geese, and pigeons, but other than...
I am trying to find chicks preferably but will give eggs a go if no other option. I thought I had found a white dorking breeder but he stopped replying to me and never invoiced me to pay for the order. I'm also seeking pure standard sized Cornish, prefer white but gladly take dark as well...
I am looking at possibly crossing a White Chantecler rooster over Light Brahma and Dark Cornish hens. Both the Brahma and Cornish have pea combs. Chantecler has a Cushion comb. I'm unfamiliar with what comb his cross would throw. I know Rose is dominant and makes up part of the cushion comb and...
Went out to feed and collect eggs. I noticed one of my Brahma hens acting odd. She hops straight up, walks a few steps then acts like she wants to sit, then hops again, repeating the cycle. When I dumped the feed came running like norm. Any clue what the behavior was about?
Just FYI Cackle Hatchery having one day 30% off Cornish Cross sale for any who were looking at buying some. Sale is not listed on their site- must call to ship or come in location for the sale price. Call 417 532 4581. See add on FB https://www.facebook.com/CackleHatcheryMO/
I am thinking of adding legbar chicks to my next batch of chicks I will be hatching out. The rooster I will be keeping from that group will likely be from 10-12 lbs and legbars hens are generally around 6lbs. Is this too big a difference?
I had a pair of pilgrim geese. My gander died in early fall 2017. I wasn't able to find a replacement gander until mid January. Now, With the original duo I only ever saw them breed with a pool out. I wasn't able to put out a pool for them this year until 2nd week of March and my goose started...
I have 8 chickens ( brahmas, white rocks, Delaware and dark cornish) and 3 pilgrim geese. My older goose is laying fine so I think they are fine on their share. My chickens haven't started laying yet, late so any day now, and between them I give about half a gallon bucket to each set.
Overall...
So, I decided to start a diary/thread to just document my growing chicks and eventual breeding and the several generation it will take to get the new breed or breeds I am after.
It is all a fun experiment and I plan to document with pics and taking weights and such.
I will follow up with some...
I have a couple dark cornish pullets and they are the most skittish, flighty things. Is this breed specific? I'm used to calm breeds like rocks, brahmas and orpingtons. These pullets are around 6ish weeks and 9ish weeks old and are just so scared of everything.
I have a 8ish week old dark cornish "pullet". The tail feathers are a bit frizzled looking and not really the nice round feathers I'm used to for a older pullet/hen. The comb is practically non existent and definitely barely pink. I'm hoping beyond hope it's a pullet, but if so she is a mean...
Who just got their first or first in a long time or even just a brand new breed?
I just bought my babies on Thursday and am getting 3 more a bit older tomorrow as well. Love to share and join in with the love of the new chicks.
