OK, my husband is afraid to reach under the broodies and retrieve the eggs. So sometimes they sit under the hens until I have time to retreive them (overnight or longer). I've been feeding the "preheated" eggs to the dogs. But do I really need to worry about them? How long is "too long"...
I have a GLW that's supposed to be a pullet. I posted pictures at 5 weeks, and everyone here thought she was a cockerel.
The bird in question is now 19 weeks old, and for all intents and purposes, still looks like a pullet. Her comb and wattles are a bit bigger than the other pullets--but...
My neighbor just called me to let me know that 3 of her 5 hens have died in the last two days. She's concerned that they may have something contagious. She says she noticed very dark diarrhea in their coop. Any idea what could be going on, and/or how careful I should be? My chickens...
My little girls (and boy) are 9 weeks old now. How much longer should I wait before I start letting them mix with the mature hens? They've "seen" each other through chicken wire, and the big girls peck at the little ones through the wire. When should I take down the barrier????? If I keep it...
and asked this morning, "Mom, what color is horse food?"
When I told him it was green, he said, "Oh, I then I fed Jay chicken food last night."
Jay seems fine this morning. And there wasn't so much as a crumble left in his feed bin.
We planted peas on 3/20. The conditions seemed perfect, and they've had a good amount of rain. But they're not even beginning to come up. Is there any chance they still will? Or did we get bad seeds?
One of my 7 week old EE chicks somehow got out of her enclosure. My little dog was whining, and when I went to see what was wrong, my big dog had the chick cornered on the sunporch. I'm quite sure he wasn't trying to hurt her, but when he gets excited (like with the cat), he can really push...
I'd like to take an informal poll on how well we guess gender here. Please include the age and breed of your chicks when you posted pictures. Please don't say who guessed incorrectly. But if you've noticed that somebody is really good at this, they'd probably like to hear it.
Speaking for...
My four chicks are now 5 weeks old. They're in the house with no heat lamp (the bulb died, but they look and act completely comfortable). They're in a brooder box they've outgrown. I'd like to move them out onto the sun porch, in a much larger area, WITH a heat lamp.
The problem is that...
Does anybody have ideas of what kind of stuff (plants and otherwise) to put in my backyard to provide hiding spots for my girls? They free range on occasion, and I'm concerned that they don't have enough places to duck out of danger, if need be. We have a very large yard, but most of it is wide...
OK, I just got the bad news that my GLW chick is a cockerel. NOT what I was hoping for. I'll now have 7 hens and a roo.
My girls free range on occasion. My neighbors have a roo (who is kept in a run with his girls). My hens have never ventured over there, even though it's only about 200...
(Determining sex, that is )
OK, I ordered three pullets, and also got an (unwanted) EE chick. I swear, 3 out of 4 are showing rooster-ish qualities
Anybody want to reassure me that I don't have roosters???
Oh--forgot to mention that they're 5 weeks old today. And you can't really tell...
I've got for "hens" that'll be 5 weeks old tomorrow. I'm afraid that two of them are roos. When should I post pictures???
(The GLW is getting a pink comb and sprouting wattles. And one of the EEs has very little tail, so I'm thinking they're both roos.)
Don't say Summer.
I'd like a cute name, possibly referencing her beautiful reddish-brown color (but not necessarily). I think she's going to be a classy chicken.
Any ideas?
After reading the horrible fiascos that some people have experiened with their chick orders this spring, I'm really counting my blessings.
I had three chicks shipped from Meyer Hatchery in Ohio (to Michigan) last month. I receieved FOUR healthy chicks. They arrived on day 4 our their lives...
My worst layer is my 10-month-old RIR. She started out great, and laid almost every day for about 3 months. Then practically nothing. Over the winter I got a couple of doulbe-shelled eggs, shell-less eggs, and misshapen eggs. But mostly nothing, day after day. She hasn't laid in weeks...
I opened a few cartons of eggs today at the grocery store (to compare for size), and I was surprised to see how DULL they were. Are fresh white eggs glossy like brown eggs? Does the "industrial" cleaning strip the sheen off of the egg? Or are all white eggs dull? They were very unappealing...
Can someone point me to guidelines on how much heat the chicks need, please. I know they need less every week. Mine are three weeks old, and I just moved them to a bigger brooder box. I'm trying to figure out how close the heat lamp needs to be (it'll be an over-head lamp). Thanks.
