    Nesting Rooster

Can anyone tell me why my rooster gets in the nest boxes? He gets in and settles in for a few minutes then gets out. The girls will gather around and talk about it, then he comes out. All but 1 of the girls have started laying although several are on winter break. So whats the deal? My old...

    Not a Lavender Orpington??

I'm beginning to question all of my guesses this time. I thought (excitedly) that this was a Lavender Orpington but now realize they don't have yellow legs and she does. Any guesses?

    Jersey giant or something else?

I got this pretty girl from Hoovers in a group of rare and standard breeds. I thought she was a Jersey Giant but she has a pea comb. Her feathers have a beautiful green sheen to them. She's not an Australorpe. What do y'all think?

RIR rooster and Dutch bantam hens

Just trying to be ahead of things. I have a large RIR (I think) rooster, 2 adult hens, and 10 16 week old babies. 9 pullets and 1 bantam Cochin cockerel. Of the 9 pullets, 1 is a Cochin bantam and 2 are Tiny Dutch bantams. Is my big rooster going to try to mate with the tinies when they mature...

    Feeling puny

Hazel is feeling puny today. I noticed she put herself to bed early last night and didn't get down for treats but took them when I offered directly to her on the roost. Today she came out and is resting out of the way. Her comb is pale. Back story. She is 2 years old and lays an egg about every...

Pidge & Midge. What are we?

Here are Pidge and Midge. They are bantams from a random bin at TSC. They look a lot like a mini Saphire Gem or Saphire the Saphire Olive egger at the bottom. With those big round black eyes, they also look like pigeons. They are the sweetest little girls and like to sit with me. At 14 weeks now...

    More than a stuffy nose

This is a 10 week old Delaware. Today I was trying to take pictures of all of my littles and she kept photo bombing which gave me a good look at what looks like swelling or a growth around her nostril. Does anyone know what could be the cause and how to treat?

    Fancy Nancy or Elton John?

My 9 week old partridge Cochin bantams is starting to worry me. Her face and comb are darkening and her waddles are growing. I also have a barred chochin bantam whos comb is still barely pink and no waddles yet. Am I worried for nothing or do I have a cockerel?

    What are these beautiful bantams?

These beauties are about 8 weeks old. They came from a mixed bin of bantams at TSC. Any ideas on what they actually are? I love their beautiful feathered feet. I'm also looking for duo name ideas for these two.

Australorps, Jersey Giant, or something else?

This little girl is 8 weeks old. I'm trying to figure out her breed. Her legs are yellow on the back and look like someone took a black sharpie down the front. I have a black Australorp hen ( had a rooster) and the feet don't match. Does anyone have any ideas?

    7 weeks. Boy or girl?

Of the 7 chicks I got from Hoover's Hatchery, this so far is the only 1 I'm worried about. I ordered 10 females and they sent 7. I'm fairly sure they are all pullets except this one. I'm still not sure. Some suggested it might be a red ranger because it is so much larger than the others. What...

    What breeds do you think?

I ordered 10 rare/standard female chicks from TSC which come from Hoover's Hatchery. They only sent 7, then I bought 4 bantams from TSC They are about 5 weeks old and now I'm wondering about the breeds. I'll worry about gender later but I'm leaning toward roo for more than 1 which doesn't make...

    Mr Weasley's Comb

Can anyone tell if this is just a dry comb or something else? I've put cononut oil on it a few times and was thinking of adding a little tea tree oil in case of fungus.

    Ugh, Raccoons!!!

My beloved Handsome Hank was killed last night in the line of duty. He protected his girls and valiantly fought off the raccoon. A fight to the death. I searched the run for the entry point and could not find it. The raccoon returned tonight for the girls. We managed to save them and brought...

    Hen with new chicks

At what age will a hen introduce her new chicks to the flock. I have mamma and babies in a wire crate in the coop and want to know when to open it to let her take them out. I raised it up a few inches to keep them dry since we've had storms lately and I have an open coop (inside the run). I...

    Good mamma, bad mamma

My Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Kevin, went broody and I put 6 eggs under her 3 weeks ago. Between a hungry snake and Shirley deciding to lay in the nest with her, I ended up with about 10 but with different hatch dates spanning about 5 days. Some have died in development but two have tried to hatch...

    Sympathetic broody?

My Black Australorp, Hazel, hasn't laid an egg since Kevin, my Appenzeller Spitzhauben, went broody. Now that it's time to hatch (more on that in another post) I found this tiny egg in the run. Shown next to RIR and EE eggs from Big Red and Shirley. I know this is called a fairy egg or fart egg...

    Broody in water

My Appenzeller Spitzhauben, Kevin, is the first of my girls to go broody. She is very dedicated to her eggs, not even letting me check them to count or candle. She did let the snake eat five the second day but I put five more under her and patched holes and she was fine. Last night, we had some...

Black snake eating eggs 1 hen?

I found a black snake in my nest box about two weeks ago. I don't kill black snakes because they kill the copperheads so I left him alone. Since then in have noticed him in the roof of the coop under the tin an few times. I put ping pong balls in all the tests and collect the eggs regularly. Am...

Roosting on top of the run!?!

My small flock of 5 have decided they want to roost on top of the run. I recently had a predator get in and kill 1 hen. After that I dissasembled my pallet coop, patched the hole in the run and rebuilt the coop. This time with a roof (they we're roosting on top of the pallet wall and I had a...
