How long can eggs be left in the coop?

The coop is in shade for most of the day and the eggs themselves were laid inside the nesting boxes. All the shells are intact. It was just a couple days of heat that I was curious about. I did the float test and all eggs sunk straight to the bottom. I have put them in the fridge and to be...

How long can eggs be left in the coop?

I would like to add a question to this thread: We have a nesting box (made of wood, covered in a blue tarp to keep the water off) We recently had a number of hot, humid days where it was 30C (86F) but with humidity felt more like 39C (102.2F) also because of the temp I didn't even go out to the...

Violet's only companion died today - and it's freezing

Oh wow. So sorry for yours and Violet's loss. :( I am not an expert by any means and I don't have a tonne of experience as we haven't had our chickens for very long, but if it were my bird and she was on her own, I would put a heat lamp in for warmth, wait out the winter and introduce a new bird...

    Chicken With Limp

Thank you so much for your help. I have been keeping an eye on their feet and I don't think bumblefoot is the problem.. and it's not seeming to be a foot problem, as she stands and can side step/move around to peck at the ground quite comfortably. It's when she is traveling from one place to...

    Chicken With Limp

Hi there! We brought home our month-old chicks in August and our little Peggy had a limp when we got her home. I am not sure if she slipped in her box on the way home in the car, or what happened. It slowed her down and she had trouble walking around for a few days when we first got her, but...

    HELP! Breed and Sex?

Update: All three hens started laying over the last two weeks. This is a picture of some of the eggs (minus 5 not pictured because we baked with them) The two on the far right had triple yokes when we cracked them open today for breakfast! Is triple yoke common?

My chickens are now 6 moths Old -still no Eggs.

I dont' see why they shouldn't lay even in the winter. If there isn't much daylight, they might just start laying later and then once laying, will lay infrequently. Good luck! :)

    HELP! Breed and Sex?

You guys are awesome. I love this community! Thanks for your help. I could kiss you. It's been a mystery and we've spent the last few months wondering in horror if we have to part with any of our new friends. The guy who sold them said they were hatched July 7th. They were a month old when we...

    HELP! Breed and Sex?

We are newbies and bought 3 1-month-old chicks.. We don't know what breed they are and we are unsure of sex. Can anyone help us out? A friend said you can tell by feed size and comb size but feet and comb seems to be the same size for all 3... though one is quite a bit darker and also has black...

    Bottom layer of shavings wet

This might be a dumb question because you said you were doing DLM but are you adding the DE? When you do, are you sprinkling it on top and then stirring it around? I think since there is composting going on with the DLM *some* moisture is to be expected but there shouldn't be a large amount of...

    Run Maintenance

We use Pine Shavings with DE. For those who do the same: I am wondering how often do you scoop out the run and replace shavings? Rainy season is upon us and I found that for about a week the yard was quite soggy from it raining every few days. If it's raining, is the DE doing anything? Part of...

Bumblefoot surgery - with pics and "how to"

I am just doing my homework as our chickens are arriving tomorrow (our first flock-- so excited!) These kinds of medical procedures, and digging around in wounds-- how do they respond? Do they wince and try to get away in response to pain? You said they lay still if they are covered. Will they...

    How do neighbouring flocks interact?

Okay thanks! I also was wondering if you think a fence would motivate them to stay in the yard-- offering a clear boundary? And I also wanted to know from anyone who can help, is there anything to be done on my part when I bring them home in order to keep the neighbours chickens safe from any...

    How do neighbouring flocks interact?

Hi there! We are getting 3 chickens for our backyard coop. We live in the country but are on a smaller lot close to the neighbours. We have built our coop and are planning to pick up our chickens this week or next, but we noticed the neighbours have chickens and let them roam free--...
