If anyone can help with this, that would be super. I think our chick had a different problem than yours. We decided to cull. Maybe you could start a new topic with a picture? That would probably get you the most help. Good luck to you!
Thanks, everyone. I think I'll put the cotton balls in a container with holes just to be safe. I did notice that all of the cotton balls disappeared last time I tried this and now I'm thinking it must have been the chickens!
If anyone has had any other success with another type of treatment...
I am trying to get rid of some ants and earwigs outdoors with a homemade borax and sugar mixture. (You soak it up into cotton balls and leave them outside for the insects and it kills them.) But I'm wondering if this is safe to use around chickens. Anyone know?
Thank you!

We have 7 chickens, had 8 but one died (kids are still sad, but hoping we'll get an Ameracauna/EE in her place). We are getting 4 more in as soon as our coop is done. We've been planning and plotting for months, but the weather hasn't been cooperative on the days we could work, a dear...

Hi Draper Chick,
Where do you get all of your information?
And, I'd still like to attend one of your classes, but didn't get a response from you. Can you PM me?
Marty
I'd love to attend, too! Do you have any openings?
I don't have any more openings--sorry! I'm not going to schedule...

Here's the ordinance for West Jordan:
West Jordan Contact: Planning & Zoning Dept. 569-5060
Zones A-1, A-5, A-20 allow unlimited chickens. Zone RR with at least .50 acres allows up to 40 animal points. Chickens=4 points each. Residents may go to the city council to propose a...
I just taught my first Backyard Chicken Farming class and it was a great success! Taught it at my home here in Draper. I've gotten requests for more classes and I'm willing to teach more if there is a demand.
I also have about 40 chicks that my children are selling as a homeschool...
My mom suggested dry ice. Put chicken in a container that will seal (like a 5 gal. bucket) and add a piece of dry ice (maybe wrap it in a cloth so she won't step on it & burn her feet). The CO2 replaces the oxygen and they just fall asleep (die) peacefully.
I called a local chicken farmer I know of and she said she kept a chicken with this problem and although she lived for a while (more than a year), she walked on her hocks the whole time and eventually got gangreen in her legs & she had her put to sleep. She said she does not attempt to keep the...
Our chick arrived from the hatchery with this problem that looks like a deformity. Its hock joint is very enlarged. It will not use that leg to walk on. Hobbles around using the other foot.
Is there ANY way to fix this? Seems like the bandaid splint technique wouldn't work in this...
How old was the chick? I'm still really wondering what to do about ours (now 5 days old). Ours has been hopping around on one leg. How do you know when to go ahead and cull? At this point we're just waiting to see if we can figure out a way to fix it.
Wow, I was just about to post a picture of our chick that has the same leg problem! Would love to hear if anyone has seen this before and what to do about it. Seems like a deformity of some kind. Joint seems swollen or larger than it should be.
Our chick is hopping on one leg and keeps the...

Thanks, for the info, Marty! The class I'm doing is at my home and I required a reservation ahead of time. I advertised mostly to people I know through homeschooling. I'm doing one in May and one in June and both are full. Popular topic right now! I would schedule more but having...

Yes, Taylorsville was one of the worst! In fact, they said that if the ordinance didn't specifically allow it, it was NOT allowed. Technically, if you owned a pet cricket, if it wasn't in the ordinance, it would not be "legal". I am glad to hear that they have it in the works to...
Hi, everyone. I'm new to BYC. What a great place to find answers & ideas! I'm in Draper, UT. I'm actually teaching a class this Saturday on Backyard Chicken Farming Basics.
I was reading a couple posts here about an area in Sandy which allows more chickens than the regular city...
