    quiet chicks

I looked into this because I have 3 new babies that are surprisingly quiet. They are hatched from our roo and some eggs that one of our hens decided to be broody on. They seem fine, eating and drinking, pooping and peeing, they are just quiet. The advice that they are probably just content...

    Chicken math strikes!

I started with eight, but two died = six. Then, all six were killed by dogs. So, I ordered 15 from a hatchery and they were wonderful! So wonderful that I ordered more, only it was Winter and so to ship them I had a minimum order of 15. No problem! 15+15=30. Then, I bought two olive eggers...

    Welsummer duds

I got 5 Welsummer day-old chicks last January from an online company and they've done well. My only complaint is that they hardly lay at all. When they first started laying I would get a few a week (identifying by color only) and now, virtually none at all. Realizing that it is Winter and all...

    Gigantic hen!

Hahahahaha You know, I never even considered that. All along he looked like a hen, just a huge one, until his comb and wattles started growing and now that you point it out to me, his tail feathers sticking up. Oh woe is me, I try not to have any roosters, and as big as he is, he may do some...

    Gigantic hen!

We took in a rescue of a scraggly little chick that someone had gotten at Easter and had living in a ten gallon fish aquarium. At the time I'd guess she was about 12 weeks old, now about 8 months. She looks like a BO but she is GIGANTIC. Seriously this bird id 2-3 times the size of my other...

Australorp has a black comb, normal?

I have three, 18 weeks old, two have pink-red combs and one has a small black comb. Weird huh? She is big and beautiful though so I will wait to see what happens.

    What breed are these?

These were bought from MyPetChicken.com as part of an assortment of brown egg layers. The other 3 types I think I have identified. What are the brown and white hens?

    Are these black australorps?

Bought as "brown egg layers" - black australorps? It is not a visible in this lighting but they have a beautiful green sheen. When they were younger I could also see purple. Their combs are very small.

Same here! I have 4 barred rocks and 2 of them are lap chickens! Unfortunately they all look exactly alike so I don't know who to pick up, I have to wait for the 2 friendly ones to make the contact with me.

I used hay at first but it got kinda damp and smelly. I then switched to pine shavings (cheap at tractor supply or walmart) and it is much better, easier to clean out and replace than hay as well.

No Free Feather we don't free range, we lost an entire flock to predators last year. We let them out sometimes when we are sitting there with them, my husband with a shotgun for hawks, but otherwise we try to keep them happy in the run and coop.

Thank! The material over the run is a black mesh used for greenhouses, a sunblock fabric. It is very strong! It is supported by PVC piping. Jeri

    Our TN coop!

We finally got finished with the girls house....I think...I may add a swing. They've got a sand bath, several branches to roost on, indoor outdoor water, hay to scratch in. I love my 13 girls and can't wait for eggs!

Hi Rose, Interesting post! Good luck with your endeavor! Your land is beautiful! My husband Eric and I are also newbies at the farm life, we bought 18 acres last May in TN and have been slowly getting it organized. I was given 6, one-day old chicks last August and they were fabulous but...
