    Bee keeping

Wasp, bumbles, butterfly's and humming birds all pollinate. The bees are easier to care for than chickens. Harvest is only twice a year. You keep an eye on them twice a month during a nectar flow. We love our busy bees. Check out Bees and Beeks on Facebook for an inside view.

Going broody in a hanging nesting box

I figured I would have a weird hatch. I went thru the whole incubator thing last year. I thought about candling the eggs. But Mabel never has been friendly and has a real pissy look on her face when I get near her. It's just Mabel and Henretta laying brown eggs. Mabel won't leave her...

Going broody in a hanging nesting box

Ty for you're reply. I thought she was going to lay a dozen eggs and then try to set them. But she's sitting on them 24/7 since the first egg. I've kept track of her egg production. She's sitting on fifteen right now. My rooster is a complete jerkoff. Do you know if he will hurt the chicks...

Going broody in a hanging nesting box

I have a year old RIR hen that has decided to go broody. Since I have a rooster and not many chickens, it's great. The only problem is that her nesting box is a few feet off the ground. And I'm concerned that the newborn chicks are going to flop right out of the nest. My question is can I...

    Hatching shipped eggs

The first shipped eggs I set came wrapped with care. No cracks or breaks. The air cells looked good. They all were fertile at first. None hatched because of a faulty heater element in my incubator. So I tried again. The the second batch of eggs came in good shape. But the air cells are...

    Incubators Anonymous

Well my first attempt at hatching failed miserably. I lost them all due to a heating element failure in a brand new incubator half way thru embryo development. I thought I had fixed the problem and had reordered more eggs for a second try. But it stopped warming again on the delivery day of...

Can you keep chickens in your house

We kept our first chicken in the house for about six to eight weeks. It was no big deal when he was only a few weeks old. We kept him in a dog kennel in my daughters room. When we were having some down time we would let him hang with us in the living room. It was good for us to get use to a...

    Only double yolks

Mable is a RIR with a deep mahagony colored collar. I read some where that meant she might be a heritage RIR. She's definitely a much darker color than the others. She just started laying about a month ago so I guess it won't last forever. But for right now were enjoying our novelty chicken...

    rooster

My Roo mostly crows early in the morning. Maybe youre just missing it. You can hear other roosters crowing in the neighborhood that tends to get him started crowing. In the beginning he would just make weird noises trying to figure out how to do it right. Its cute.

One eyed chicken lays outside the box

I found a storage basket with more room to move. I put some hay and litter in it and bam they layed an egg in it. But even with a box per hen someone is still laying on the coup floor. So in go the fake eggs. Hopefully when the rooster crows all the eggs will be in baskets.

    Egg life

If a broody hen lays ten eggs. It took her ten days to lay them. Just layed eggs go dormant to give the hen time to accumulate enough eggs to set. So no worries you should be fine. But after you refridgerate them its a different story. Dont let them sit out more than a few hours.

Can a double yoked egg kill a young chicken?

My chickens are about six months old. I have one who lays double yolks. It doesnt seem to bother her at all. With that many chickens its going to be hard to keep an eye on all of them. You're going to have the occasional mystery death. You can put her in the freezer and have a vet check her...

    6th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2015 Hatch-A-Long

As long as you incubate in a room with central heat. And have in mind a place to keep them warm til spring it would be ok. I have to warn you that deep drops in temperature will give you major problems with you're hatch. My first batch only made it half way because our cabin only has space...
