My 3 turkeys the same have a little coop up off the ground with a roosting bar in it When it's -10 outside they don't go in they stay out in the pen I do have roosting bars for them in the pen
I have 3 broad breasted bronze 1 male 2 females they share pen but is divided due to males extreme weight Every once in awhile the 2 females fight One is very aggressive she spreads her wings and picks on the other female Sometimes the one gets all bloody around the face If I catch...
From what I read this breed is usually bred by artificial inseminatiin because Of the weight issue. No pasture. We have about an acre so not much room. The two pens they're in r pretty big both being around 10X12 Both have roosting bars. Although big bird I guess is too heavy to get up on his...
That sounds like a plan but not possible first he's huge. Have no way to estimate his weight but the biggest one I ever seen. I couldn't grab his legs without extreme injury. He's got huge nails and Spurs. He would most definitely tear me apart. I do take a broom with me if I've got to go in his...
Problem is with putting them together is he's so big he hurts them when mating. I've read where they can actually rip muscle layers and kill them. I did try one time to put them together then I couldn't even get into the females pen to feed or change water. He'd get me upon entering the pen...
I wasn't sure how long turkeys live. I know not to long so since mine r 3 years I keep a close eye on them. Last summer my male was limping so I was concerned since he's so huge. But after a couple weeks he was better. I couldn't get close enough to really examine his leg
Love your pic. It looks just like my Big Bird He too spends a lot of time looking like he's the most awesome turkey in the world. At least he thinks he is.
Would love to have seen that. Someone missed an opportunity to video tape. Sorry I realize your post is several years old. But was here responding to a response to my post.
My turkeys r 3 years old and I didn't c my male do the stomping thing until last summer. And Roada I'm fairly new here too and still have problem navigating this site not the most user friendly. U have to just look around to get use to it.
. Thanks for your response. Not sure if I'm responding in the right place. This site is really hard to navigate. Not females aren't aggressive just the male. He get aggressive as soon as he sees me. I'll try doing as u suggested but he's so old not sure it will make a difference. I've tried...
That's awesome. I'm really jealous. One reply a while ago explained turkeys r livestock not expected to make good pets. So thought I was wrong in getting them as pets. Glad to here some do make good pets
Thanks guys for the replies. I can't let the male in with the females for 2 reasons. One he mounts them and he's so huge he hurts them. I've read where broad breasted are artificially inseminated due to the very fact. They have been known to rip through muscle layers. Second I could not Get...
Thanks for your reply. I've only been allowed to pet one of the girls when she lays down for the male. At that time I take advantage and pet her head and neck also. I got them When they were young not sure how old but not super young. I use to sit in the little pen we had for them and thay would...
I am so jealous of all of u talking about how u get to pet your turkeys. Mine won't let me touch them. And the male comes at me with his Spurs and claws. I've never done anything to them. Give them treats daily and when we're little all 3 would roost on my arm at the same time. But something...
They're loving the warm weather. Girls are not getting along. The bigger one picks on the other she's only got 1 tail feather left and many others gone. If it turns cold here she will prob not make it
Mine r so spoiled. I give them treats. Sunflower seeds dried meal worms and cracked corn in addition to their normal food daily. The 2 girls I let out daily and they fly short distances and eat grass. I pick grass and give to big bird (the male). We have a small coop with a roost in it for bad...
Thanks everyone for UR replies. I was able a couple times when the female was laying down right outside the males fence I presume assuming the position for him it knowing he couldn't get at her anyway she did let me pet her all over head neck back I really enjoyed that. But that's the only time...
Thanks for the reply I love pets but unfortunately I have allergies to most that's like cats and dogs my turkeys don't seem to affect my allergies. I was very disappointed that I could not interact with the turkeys I thought when they were young and they all roosted on my arm when I put it out...
