Laying hens with "water belly" or "ascites"?

So if draining the hen only makes her comfortable for a short while, what can be done to heal her from internal laying? Right now I have the 2nd hen in 3 months with this going on. We euthanized the first one, and I performed a necropsy (not an expert at this at all!). I saw no eggs of any...

Eggbound hen, don't feel an egg, need advice

Thanks for all the kind words. I don't want my chickens to die, but if they do, I prefer they do it quickly while I'm not around! I performed a partial necropsy today....I'm not very skilled at this, so having trouble finding all the parts. Plus, she was still partially frozen, since we put...

Eggbound hen, don't feel an egg, need advice

We decided to put her out of her misery today. She was just getting weaker & weaker, still "contracting". I will do an autopsy this weekend to find out what was really going on. Thanks all for the advice, wish there was something I could've done to save her, but at least her suffering is over.

Eggbound hen, don't feel an egg, need advice

She is not doing very well today, not eating, not drinking. She has stopped "contracting". I managed to get a little yogurt & honey with a drop of polyvisol in it in her. Have been trying to keep getting water in her. My husband went to Farm & Fleet for some penicillin. I will try that as a...

Eggbound hen, don't feel an egg, need advice

If anyone has any other advice, please let me know. I have now jabbed her with a needle to drain in case she is full of fluid, just a little blood came out. Another warm bath & gyne exam - nothing. Not sure she will make it through the night.

Eggbound hen, don't feel an egg, need advice

Gave her a calcium/magnesium supplement, got some water in her, tried to feel if there is an egg, but didn't want to push too hard.......didn't feel anything. She is still "contracting" trying to pass something. Is there anything else I can try? I'm just letting her rest now.

Eggbound hen, don't feel an egg, need advice

My 2 1/2 year old RIR/BA mix hen has been trying to lay an egg for at least a day. I brought her into the house last night when she was hunched up in the nest box instead of roosting. Since then, I have given her a little mixture of ground calcium supplement, yogurt & honey on her beak. She...

Will Eprinex pour on work for round worms?

I treated all my chickens (or so I thought - 3 look so much alike I can't tell the difference and 1 might have gotten a double dose and another no dose) back at the end of Nov with Valbazen, followed by Eprinex pour on 2 weeks later. A week ago I saw some worms in 1 chicken's poop. Based on...

    Did polyvisol kill my hen?

Thank you, I wish I had just separated her & waited. It's always the friendliest hens that seem to die first. (sigh)

    Did polyvisol kill my hen?

One of my hens was acting sick today, so I put a couple drops of polyvisol vitamins (without iron) in a jar with about a tbsp of water. I put some on her beak (not more than a 1/4 tsp) and in 5 minutes she had convulsions and died! Did I kill her by giving the vitamins to her? I knew she was...

Avril didn't make it through this heat wave

I was on vacation, had a friend watching the chickens through this horrible heat spell. Was really worried about the 2 - 12 week old RIR's I just added to the flock. But I should've been more worried about Avril, my sweet, tame 3 year old Americauna. I know she had started to molt, and was...

    Zombie chicken. Need help please

You could give her a warm bath if you suspect that she's egg-bound. Also, some yogurt or anything to boost her calcium level.

Help! Smelly, watery poop and they have stopped laying eggs

6 days ago I gave my 10 3 year old hens some table scraps. It didn't smell bad (spanish rice). The next day I noticed that their poop was watery. It was also very hot out, so I thought that could be the problem. The weather has cooled off now, but their poop is still watery and green (though...
