My 2 1/2 year old RIR/BA mix hen has been trying to lay an egg for at least a day. I brought her into the house last night when she was hunched up in the nest box instead of roosting.
Since then, I have given her a little mixture of ground calcium supplement, yogurt & honey on her beak. She...
I treated all my chickens (or so I thought - 3 look so much alike I can't tell the difference and 1 might have gotten a double dose and another no dose) back at the end of Nov with Valbazen, followed by Eprinex pour on 2 weeks later. A week ago I saw some worms in 1 chicken's poop. Based on...
One of my hens was acting sick today, so I put a couple drops of polyvisol vitamins (without iron) in a jar with about a tbsp of water. I put some on her beak (not more than a 1/4 tsp) and in 5 minutes she had convulsions and died! Did I kill her by giving the vitamins to her? I knew she was...
I was on vacation, had a friend watching the chickens through this horrible heat spell. Was really worried about the 2 - 12 week old RIR's I just added to the flock. But I should've been more worried about Avril, my sweet, tame 3 year old Americauna. I know she had started to molt, and was...
6 days ago I gave my 10 3 year old hens some table scraps. It didn't smell bad (spanish rice). The next day I noticed that their poop was watery. It was also very hot out, so I thought that could be the problem. The weather has cooled off now, but their poop is still watery and green (though...
I have 10 hens right now, 3 years old. Have a 8 ' x 4' coop, plus a fenced area 50' x 100' that they can run in. I bought 2 RIRs and 3 cornish x from farm & fleet almost 6 weeks ago. I also have a small coop, made from a desk, and a fenced area about 6' x 4'. I want to move the cornish & RIR...
I got both SLW at the same time, added to an existing flock. Salty is pretty aggressive, so even though she's new, she doesn't get much abuse from the rest of the flock. Pepper is pretty much the lowest on the pecking order. Last week, Salty pulled out a lot of Pepper's neck feathers at...
I gave my chicks the Wazine in the water today. I know we can't eat the eggs for 2 weeks, but could I cook them up for the chicks? They could really use the protein right now, as some of them are molting.
The bottle says 2 oz per 2 gallons of water for 100 chickens. So I made 1/2 oz per 1/2 gallon, but I only have 10 chickens! Is that too much? I put that in the coop tonight and I'm sure they all had some. Should I just give them regular water now?
They are predicting high winds for the next 2 days. Should I keep the chickens cooped up? We have a very large (50 x 100 ft) fenced area. Will they be safe? Are they smart enough to go in the coop or hide in the brush? We don't usually get wind like that for any length of time here.
I didn't even know that she was really ill! She was in the nest box at night instead of on the perch. I checked for any mass (like a stuck egg) and found none. she didn't seem to be suffering, but how could I tell? I made myself a note to check on her this morning and she was cold on the...
Not sure if this is the right place for it, but when do hens molt? Mine are exactly 18 months, and look pretty raggedy. I see a few more feathers around than usual, and they are laying less eggs, but I'm still getting 3 - 6 eggs daily from 8 hens. Some of them seem to be growing new feathers...
I just got 2 SLW from someone locally. I had my DH build a nice little coop from an old desk, and fence off an area about 6' x 4' to keep them in temporarily. 1 of them seems to escape all the time! I've only had them for 2 days. Tonight I got home almost dark and she was wandering around...
I got the desk from freesources.org, and my DH built a little coop in case I have a broody or for when I get more chicks. It's not winter hardy, but pretty sturdy!
Still needs painting, though (that's my job!) Total costs ~ $25.
My favorite hen is eggbound. I have been able to feel the egg for 6 days now. I tried everything to get it out - baths, oatmeal with calcium, I tried to pull it out myself. I couldn't see the egg, so I couldn't break it & try to get all the shell out. The vet is going to charge me about $150...

I'm in the Chicago area (SW suburbs), currently roosterless. If you have a nice, non-aggressive rooster you are looking to get rid of, I would take him for my flock.
My Ameraucana is close to 1 year old, and didn't start laying eggs until late Feb. All was fine until a month ago. I see her sitting on the nest box, but she doesn't lay an egg. At night, I massage her belly, and can feel the egg. Twice she has laid a fully formed egg with an extra membrane...
