When I first got my chickens this summer, I knew that I'd develop weird habits with them. The baby talk was a given. But now ... I have found myself doing even stranger things. Like smelling the chicken feed. I LOVE the smell of their food! Every morning after I mix their feed in with a little...
I went to Western Washington University and graduated with a BA in human services a few years back. I'd love to get a masters degree, but I have no clue what I'd want to get a degree in!
Thank you for the kind words and suggestions, but she didn't make it more than a few hours :( She was our favorite, and we were really looking forward to the blue eggs she was going to lay, but at least she died happier and warmer than our other girl. The closest vet to me is over an hour away...
This morning one of my cochin pullets was dead. She'd been sick for a while (treating for worms) and after keeping her inside for a few weeks I put her back in the coop because she was looking better, and I was deworming everyone. Fast forward to coming home from work, and my easter egger was...
Her poop seems somewhat normal, but really watery. There's still a solid part to it that doesn't look too different than the poop from the healthy chickens, but you can see that the bedding around and under the poop has absorbed a bit of water. Plus, wet butt feathers.
One of my 13 week old cochins hasn't been herself for a few weeks. When we got the pullets at 4 weeks she was the most afraid of humans, the biggest (or at least fluffiest) and most outspoken about issues like being picked up. Lately she's been quieter, doesn't fight being picked up, and also is...
Very true. I guess "tiny" is a pretty relative term. When I think Tiny Home I think of the 100-200 square foot houses built on trailers (or easy to load onto one) because that's what the people I know want. I really agree with you that smaller houses and more yard space are the way to go. If...
I live in a rented house that doesn't allow any pets (or bikes) in the house as written in the contract. But, after living there for a little while and asking if we could get a few chickens my landlord's response was "why the **** not!". There were some limitations, like having the coop behind...
Yesterday my landlord knocked on my door to let me know he was spreading grass seed/fertilizer on chunks of my yard (there are quite a few spots of fresh dirt from various projects he's done recently) and to make sure the chickens weren't out. I haven't finished the outside of their pen yet, so...
Hello from another new Washingtonian! I live out on the Olympic Penninsula and have 2 cochins, an orpington, and an easter egger who will be 12 weeks old tomorrow. I'm glad to see so many other people from Washington with chickens, but those bear pictures from a few posts back are a little scary!
I'm not crazy into tiny homes, but I have a few friends who want nothing more in life than to have a tiny home. I also live in a park model home that by some standards is a tiny/small home, though more out of necessity than by choice.
What I've most learned is that people like to build tiny...
Shirts, rings, my hair ... but the weirdest so far has been my fingernails. I rarely paint them, so when I showed up at the coop a few days ago with shiny mint green nails the babies decided that I'd attached treats to my fingers! And yet they don't seem to like any treats besides oatmeal...
Hi!
These little babies are almost 12 weeks old. We got them at 4 weeks, and it has been SO fun to watch them grow! My husband and I have both wanted chickens for years, and after we got married we convinced our landlord to let us build a little coop and get a few. That's definitely one of...
