Ameraucana, Whiting true blue, wyandotte, opringtons, french black copper marans, bielefelder, blue laced red wyandotte, golden laced wyandotte are the new girls.
Gunna have color if they ever come out and run around.
So, it came that time to replenish the hen flock as they were getting older and the egg production is dimming. 25 hens and 15 eggs per day. Put the order in for 25 more chicks and they arrived in March. A very colorful group which is what we wanted to brighten up the yard. The older (senior)...
Very good information here but I still have a few questions.
The chicks stayed in the dining room for the first week. They moved out to a heated shed (60F) for the second week. I used the heat lamp for the first few days and then turned it off for longer periods. They live at 60F and seem not to...
Harley,
I am about to get 6 guineas to compliment my 21 hens. I have been searching the boards to educate myself on guinea behavior. The only thing I have not found is the scratching habits of the guinea. I keep the chickens away from my gardens and shrub beds. Their scratching makes a mess...
Here is an update. Mr Romeo was put in isolation in a fenced in blueberry patch. He is within sight of the flock and does his dancing and trying to attract the hens attention. After he was pulled from the flock a pullet was being picked on so much that she would hide in a nesting box all day. To...
His usual MO is to wait until he corners an older hen and then pecks their head until they pass out or until he had enough. I found my black EE under a bench and had to revive her with water. For the past two nights my expired hen roosted on the opposite side of the coop and tucked is a corner...
There are no complaints with his mating style. Very quick, quiet and you are right, you wouldn't even know it unless you saw him on top. His so called groupies follow him around and all is good. It's just his despise for the older girls and how he abuses them, especially the EEs.
I might try...
He is going up for felony homicide (chickencide) today. He killed my favorite old girl who was the dominate girl in the flock. I found her dead on the poop board when I got home from work.
Mr Tough Guy is spending his first night out free ranging under the stars.
My question is what will...
for what he is doing to my girls.
This is my first roo and his idea of fun is making everyone exhausted. Constantly on the prowl and sneaking around to catch a young one off guard and then the chase is on.
I surprised he doesn't go after the older hens!! haha He would be missing feathers...
That is some tail. can anyone tell me what it is. Thanks in advance for all the comments.
15 weeks old and has had that red comb for at least 7 weeks. Trouble maker in the run all day long. Squeeking, squawkin and a real bugger to catch. Also, very small compared to the other litter mates.
It took a long time for mine to eat anything but their feed. Now they eat anything I put in the run. All it takes is one bird to try it and then they all have to have it. Just start with one treat and keep at it until they look forward to it, then try sometime else. My young ones take the corn...
9 for 9. First time since the young chicks were introduced to the 'BIG' house. I even found one young Buff, who flew over the fence, mingling with the big girls. Maybe she was getting some pointers.
I have 7 week old chicks. They roost on the bars during the day for a nap or preening. At dusk they go into the coop and pile up in a corner. They are 3 deep and the squawking doesn't stop. I also put them on the roost bars but they jump off and run for the pile.
Very strange behavior.
