Yesterday I learned that a friend died in a tragic car accident as she was driving home from a camping trip. Apparently, she was negotiating a blind curve, saw a stopped car ahead that was waiting to turn left, and braked so hard that they locked. As a result, her Civic fishtailed into the...
My most beloved 14 month old Barred Rock hasn't laid an egg for 3 days. This is pretty aberrant for her; she's laid an egg everyday since 20 weeks. I saw her in the nest box this morning for about 1.5 hours yet she didn't produce anything, but it doesn't look like she may be internally...
This is still months away, but I bought the Garden Coop plan in the hopes of using it to give my chickens a more spacious home. Seeing as I have no construction skills and frankly, the lack of interest in building it, and my husband would probably take a few months time to get it done with his...
There's a good chance that I'll be moving in September 1000 miles away from where I currently live. I'm just trying to figure out the logistics of bringing my chickens with me. Hypothetically, they'll be riding with us between 2 cars (sedans) for a 16 hour drive to our new house. Has anyone done...
My two younger, 18 week old EEs somehow found their way up to the "top floor" of the big girls' coop today and stayed there, long enough for the 3 hens to find them there when it was time to go in from a day of free ranging. I just checked on them. It looked as though for the most part the big...
Today I attempted to integrate my 2 16-week old EEs with my 3 hens. It didn't go well. They were constantly picked on and some blood was drawn-there was a small speck of blood one of the EEs's combs. Granted, my coop/attached run is relatively small. The coop area is above ground (4 X 3) with a...
I have two 9 week old EEs and was wondering if they'd be able to withstand our 25* nighttime temps? They look like mini chickens, mostly feathered out.
Also, has anyone ever used a large dog crate (like the portable plastic ones) as a temporary grow out coop for a few young chickens? I don't...
I posted about one of the chicks last week but perhaps some new feathering will help with sexing.
Here's Chick A:
...and Chick B:
Both of them together (A on left):
Sorry, it was an impromptu photo session so forgive the mediocrity of angles/quality.
What do you think?
What do you think? I got this one a week ago and he/she's feathering out a little slower than her brooder buddy, also an EE. "She's" also smaller than the other one, but has a slightly bigger comb. I was told she was a girl. And a purebred Ameraucana (*sigh*).
I noticed today that my 9 month old Red Sex-Link has some missing feathers on the back of her neck; it almost gave me a heart attack. The area isn't bloody and the bare patch looks pretty symmetrical. I understand that the neck and head area are the first places where they start losing feathers...
Does someone have pictures of these different colors? I'm not quite certain what exactly "slate blue" should look like, and looking at the chicks I got, if you squint a little and cross your eyes, the color of their legs could go either way.
Will an Ameraucana, say a Wheaten, when crossed with a Lavender Ameraucana, for example, have offspring that are still considered "purebred" or do they have to be in the same color group?
My BR has laid 2-3 eggs (the 3rd one is questionable, might be from another pullet) in the past 7 days. On average, how long will it take for her to start laying more regularly?
Is it common to get meat spots on the first eggs of a newly laying pullet? My BR, who has oh-so-graciously given me but 3 eggs in the last week produced ones with meat spots on all of them. Has this ever happened to anyone?
In the coop this morning I found what appeared to be a light brown soft shell with no innards. Can this be considered her first attempt at laying or is it one of those random occurrences like the so-called fart egg?
I'm just wondering, especially for those who choose not to use artifical light in the winter to keep the ladies laying. Here in Colorado Springs, the going rate is about 12. Living in Seattle, I remember it being more like 10.
I'm trying to establish how close my EEs are to laying and it doesn't seem like their pea combs are growing in size or getting very red. Will this even happen? They're around 20 weeks old.
My Cuckoo Marans has been squatting for two weeks now, has huge bright red combs and wattles, almost to the point where she has the comb-over look. Where are my eggs?? I'm 98.7% positive she's not laying anywhere, as I have obsessively searched every nook and cranny where she can possibly lay...
