Hi all, as winter sneaks up, I'm looking at ideas for my ducks.
They have access to a 1/3 acre pond and it will have some open water most of the winter. In their pen, I have a small kiddie pool they dunk in and drink from.
Has anyone used one of the outdoor heated floor pads for dogs/kennels...
Electric fence netting update
Hey all, I thought I would share my electric fence update. I've had the birds in the pen for about 8 weeks more or less. The fencing works as they say....and they do say that it will not keep chicks inside. I kept the chicks in a closed shelter for the first 2 -...
Hi all, newbie question, but I'd welcome your help. I ordered chicks from MacMurray around the beginning of August and checked the box for "free rare chick" and received this little guy / gal.
Any thought or ideas of breed? I'm guessing its a pullet and we're at about 7 or 8 weeks.

Did you find him on Craig's list? I saw a similar mix advertised there....was very tempted but wasnt sure I had the time for a puppy this year. he is adorable. And should be a good watch dog.
Hey all, this is a minor twist on the age old question of how to best manage two roosters. Thanks for your patience reading this.
I raised pheasants for two years before deciding to "try" egg chickens this spring. Rather than buy a big batch, I started with 6 from the feed store, 4 pullets...
This year, raccoons have been responding to cracked corn, in a pile, in my Havahart trap. Usually one a day or every other day. Last year it was sardines or fish. The occasional possum will take cantelope rinds. I have a skunk, too, but haven't figured out his/her favorite yet.
Yes, thanks for asking, the new chicks arrived: 25 barred rocks + 1 "mystery chick bonus" from MurrayMcMurray...and 25 colored range chicks from JM Hatchery. The Barred Rocks arrived Thursday with one doa from the trip, the colored range arived Friday. I kept them inside until Saturday...
Flash Point, I'm sorry for your loss. It's amazing how attached we can get -- and then we're reminded we don't own them, we share them and sometimes we have to give them back before we're ready.
Quick update on my Premiere netting, the replacement wiring harness and tester arrived today and the fence appears to be working as it should. New chicks arrive tomorrow and later in the week. Now I can sleep (a little bit) easier.
Update:
First, again, a huge thanks to all of you who reply to new people like me. Our conversations and your advice have motivated my friend to place an order for chicks to raise. Which is a win-win for all.
Thanks again!
Thank you all very much. I appreciate the help I get here.
We're re-thinking a new plan. I have 4 hens and 2 roos (they were straight run and I took my chances) If I give up two of the hens, I'm down to two and two roos/hens......which is asking for trouble.
I have more day-old barred rock...
A friend wants to get started with chickens and I am offering her a young pullet from my flock of 6. How do chickens adapt from a group to living alone for a while? it may be spring before they add other chicks to their flock.
Thoughts anyone?
Hi all, here's an update on my poultry netting. The folks at Premiere were very helpful and we've narrowed it down to one problem (which became two). We *think* the problem is in the wiring harness connection to the ground rod...so they are shipping a new wiring harness....but also, as I was...
Clay or Flash point...
I am not getting much power on my netting, I wonder if you can help trouble shoot if you are online today. I'll call Premiere Monday.
I set up in short grass (mower height 2-3 inches) Had the charger on for a day in a half (they suggest 3, so that may be my problem)...
A quick 1-2-3 of putting in the poultry netting fencing from Priemer. UPS driver dropped off two boxes, one with the netting, the other with the energizer.
The netting comes wired and with poles in place (photo one)
I just un rolled and un folded 164 feet of it (photo two)
and then...
Flash Point, thanks for the tip, I ordered from them -- the 48in double spike foot and extra poles and splurged on the solar energizer.
It arrived this morning, and I just set it up in under an hour. I'll go back and tighten up the lines after it has a day or so to relax. Also, my neighbor...
