Duck coughing/shaking head for a week now. Video included.

Hey folks. Our 5-month-old muscovy female, Stump Duck, hasn't been quite right for the last several days. On Tuesday she basically sat in a bush alone all day and did not want to eat. Every day since, she has resumed eating, drinking, and hanging out with the flock. She seems to want to drink a...

lavender Ameraucana roo/cream legbar hen cross?

I'm still learning about chicken genetics and lavender is confusing me a bit. If I put my lavender roo over my legbars, what kinds of colors would I be looking at in the F1 crosses?

    Four mystery bantams

All cockerels but one, I fear, but I wonder if anyone has ideas on the breeds of these six week olds! The black one has an impressive rose comb and stand-up tail feathers. I'm pretty sure the one with the muff is a bantam EE (her legs are SO green!) but the others are wholly a mystery to me.

Tiniest bantam I've ever seen - what breed is this 6-week-old?

Clean legged, small crest. Probably the size of a small 2-week-old standard chicken, but they are nearly 6 weeks old. They came from Cackle in a bantam mix and I'm stumped! We've never seen one this tiny! They're dwarfed by the silkies and the bantam rocks!

Any clues as to what breed this 4-week-old chicken is?

4 weeks old today. Came in an order from Cackle but was unaccounted for in my order, and they are not a breed I have ever seen before. Appears to be standard size and does have very feathered feet.

Baby chick with head injury - advice?

Early Monday morning, a chick from our hen's clutch hatched earlier than the others. But the hen is apparently a bad mama, and gave it several pretty harsh pecks. We removed the chick to a safe area, cleaned the wounds with a bit of saline, and have been putting polysporin on the primary wound...

Blue Ameraucana - Hen or Roo? (BAFFLED!)

As the title says - we're baffled. 12 weeks old and we have no idea what's going on with this "guy." This chicken is BIGGER than all of the other blue guys - we're sure the other blues are cockerels due to their long and curving tail feathers and pointy saddle feathers. I thought this guy was a...

My Speckled Sussex is now exactly 1 year old - and she has NEVER laid an egg.

So... I know hens take different lengths of time to come into lay, and I know the heavy breeds like Jersey Giants and so forth can take longer. But has anybody ever had a hen of this age - a year or more - who appeared perfectly healthy but had NEVER laid an egg? She appears mature - her comb...

How soon can I mix my one week old Runners with my two week old Pekins?

I am currently brooding two different ages of ducklings. Some of my ducks didn't survive the journey, so we got a hatchery reshipment. The first , older group are 12 days old. The second, smaller group are 6 days old. The first group is composed of 6 Pekins, some of whom weigh 15oz already...

Emergency please help: stuff hanging out of vent

We came home to see our chicken standing in her nesting box. She had what looks like a puddle of egg white under her. We checked her vent and found a tube like object hanging out. We immediately brought her inside and took this photo. She's not making any noises and her vent looks like it's...

Several chickens with bald spots and one with a head lesion... HELP

Yesterday evening I noticed one of my chickens had a scab looking thing on her head. On closer inspection, it was a small patch above her comb with no feathers (and small scabby bits). Then I realized multiple chickens had head problems. 4 out of 6 have something weird going on. I smeared them...

We have a runt chicken (about 1/2 the size she's supposed to be). Can she lay?

Hi all. We have a mysterious situation on our hands. Our flock of 6 chickens are about 17 weeks old now. One of our girls, the cream crested Legbar, is a runt. She has been small and behind the others since she was 3-4 weeks old. We have given her lots of special support both to keep her...

Help! What's this in my Orpington's eye?

Hi BYCers, On a routine check of my 10-week-old pullets today, I saw that my buff Orpington has an anomaly in her right eye. This looks like tissue or some sort of growth rather than being her actual eye or eyelid, but we can't really tell. It is not a foreign body. I looked around the...

OK, this Easter Egger is a puzzle to me. Pullet or cockerel?

We have our first Easter Egger, and we've flip flopped several times on "her" gender. She's now 10 weeks old. I posted a pic of her a month or so ago, and we guessed pullet. I was feeling pretty secure given the lack of apparent comb or wattles, but just recently she's been developing some...

Is this a Speckled Sussex pullet?

This was a mystery peep I picked out of the feed store bin labeled 'Golden Comets.' She's clearly not a Golden Comet. As she was growing, we guessed Welsummer or possibly Leghorn. However now, at 9 weeks, I'm pretty sure she is a Speckled Sussex pullet. Thoughts?

    What the heck is Pumpkin?

Pumpkin came out of a mixed feed store bin (along with an Easter Egger who I'm 97% certain is a cockerel). I don't think she herself is an Easter Egger as she has carrot-orange feet, but I can't place her. She had reddish chipmunk down as a baby and now that she's getting a few more feathers I...

One of our chicks is really underweight. Ideas for helping Nemo?

Hi folks, I'm at my wits' end with this one. Little Nemo is a Cream Legbar and she is 3 weeks old today. She lives in a mixed flock with 5 others. When she arrived, she was the same size as our other girls, but in the subsequent weeks we have noticed that she is extremely slow to grow...

Poo issues with chicks - increase dose of corid? (photos)

We have a group of six baby chicks, about two weeks old, and we've noticed a few abnormal droppings. One of them is producing a somewhat wet poo, and another seems to be producing runny, bubbly diarrhea. When we first started noticing the repeated abnormal poopers (five days ago) we decided to...

Dosing chicks for cocci before symptoms appear?

Hi all! I'm a first time BYCer (and my husband is on this adventure with me). We have our first batch of six in the brooder right now - five of them are a week old and one a little older. The older one is a big ol Easter Egger we picked up at the feed store yesterday. Now, here is the...

I'm allowed to have 3 chickens in Burlington, Vermont. Can I raise a meat turkey, too?

I am trying to interpret our city's poultry ordinance and I am just... frankly not very good at understanding these things. We're about to start our first backyard flock, who will free range in our large fenced backyard. From anyone's knowledge or experience, would I also be permitted to get a...
