I haven't worked them or medicated them for anything. I know they were bought from our IFA out here so I guess they received their standard vaxs. I keep telling the others to stay alive.
It's been beautiful weather lately. 70s and 80s. I don't know who does which poop. We have/had four RIRs, two BO pullets, a BR pullet and five chicks we just bought. They all seem normal.
I don't know what's going on. I was given four Rhode Island Red hens one year ago in November when they were about a year and a half. They were pretty decent layers up until a few months ago. On Saturday morning, I went out to check on the new chicks and give the older hens some table scraps...

I'm so glad my husband made me a new chick brooder for the five new chicks we got. It hinges on the top so it is super convenient to open, get the chicks in and out and fill the food and water. It's attached the to Rubbermaid tote so they have a nice place to go at night or during the rain. I...
I'm worried about blood going everywhere and turning my house or yard into a horror movie. Of course, now that I get up my nerve to actually take care of these hens, someone starts laying again.
I think we are going to process our chickens on Saturday. I'm a little nervous. I just needed to check to make sure there is no ordinance prohibiting killing, plucking, and processing in our backyard. We are in Salt Lake City.

I'm going to try combining my two little flocks tonight. Wish me luck. They should have had plenty of time to work out their issues through the wire fence.
I have velcro on my cockerel right now. Hopefully, it will work until it's time for freezer camp. If not, a friend of mine will hold...
Does anyone have a rooster collar I could borrow for a few months here in SLC? I want to get my one rooster to be big enough for freezer camp, but according to my neighbor, he sounds like a squeaky toy in the morning.

I think one of my older hens might have a minor prolapsed vent. I want to try to give her a bath tomorrow to clean the droppings off. Any tips for a first timer?
Here are a couple picks of my latest girls. Do you think that BR looks like a roo? I hope not because I like his/her? coloring better than the other that looks a bit smudged.

When do roos usually show their true colors? I have a barred rock that I am wondering about. Her/his comb is much redder than the other BR and is definitely dominant. I think it is about 5 weeks old. Any good tips to sort out the hens from the roos?
We got more chicks! My husband kept saying he didn't want any more chickens right now, but he stopped at IFA to look at honey supplies and came home with two BO chicks. When he saw how much we loved them, he proposed going back for two more chicks and we ended up with two Plymouth Barred...
There was a story on KSL about a duck with bird flu found in Davis County. Do I need to do anything different with my birds because of it? I'm in Salt Lake.
Hey, I've been lurking and wanting chickens forever. My neighbor is getting out if the chicken hobby so she has offered her four birds and coop to us for free! Hooray! I'm so excited. I think she said they are all RIR and they are about two years old. Oh,and we are in SLC near the airport.
