Looks like a pullet to me. Best to show a pic with the other two though for comparison. Although if they are hatchery stock they won't necessarily be from the same "line" because it's my understanding they flock or clan breed (I forget the term). Nuances like ability to sex breeds such as...
It leaves them off balance so they can't fly. Some can still fly with both wings clipped because they can balance their weight. Some really strong willed ones can even fly with a wing clipped! Clipping one is your best bet though. We free range and have predators around, so I don't clip...
Closed flock means she does not introduce new birds. I believe she does sell some but she is very choosy as she really is committed to preserving the breed, not to making money. @CanuckBock tagging you so you can see we're talking about you ;) And yes, she is extremely knowledgeable (and busy!).
I agree with getting day olds. Incubating can be fun and rewarding but also challenging and difficult if you have any incubator issues and then hatch problems. When someone else hatches them for you, you shouldn't get any with defects and they should be selling you strong chicks, although...
For those looking for Orpingtons, you may want to look at Papa's Poultry. He's here on BYC, has a website and a FB page and ships eggs, chicks and started birds. Lots to choose from. I'm thinking of getting some of his partridge Brahma and maybe some English Orpington too - hatching eggs.
Gorgeous eggs! I may have to get a Welsummer roo to cross with my Ameraucanas and Cream Legbars - I love that shade of green. My BCMarans roo will throw a darker olive. Unfortunately, I gave most of the crosses to my brother and the remaining one got killed by a hawk a month or two ago -...
Maybe @Beekissed will chime in as she cans chicken a lot. I ended up selling my last 4 cockerels as I just don't have time and space right now as we're in the midst of a major remodel and living in a tiny kitchen with an apartment sized stove. I do believe she said if you can the bones to...
Hi Everyone! Haven't been on in a while, busy with the remodel which is finally in the final stretches (maybe move into the main house sometime in March).
Penny, sorry to hear about your mom's decline. I pray that she has a peaceful passing when the time comes and is surrounded by love...
I'm no expert but here are my suggestions based on my experience and what I would do in your case:
The fact that she is half the weight of your others tells me it's more than just the molting. I would suspect a parasite and perhaps coccidiosis. I had two nearly POL pullets last year go like...
Lol - Me too! This morning I took the kids to their bus stop (at the end of our driveway :) came back and heard cackling in our carport. Well, shoot, who's doing that? Well, turns out I must have not bungeed the gate shut on one of our coops and all those birds were looking for breakfast! A...
Nice looking Flowers you got there! I'd love to see a side view of the boy with the blue/orange/white chest. The hen in the second photo is very similar to our Crazy Hair, except for her head (lack of crest and smaller comb/wattles by a touch).
Aww, thanks! Her name was Crazy Hair My husband named the buff one Whitey Bulger (I think after a gangster?) She was his favorite - and he's not really a "chicken guy". He thought she was cool though. We were sad to lose these two from our flock.
Will someone please tell me your process for canning pumpkins safely? The master-canner lady I spoke to at our local university extension said you can't do it. The only thing that survived this first year in our unfenced garden were the little pumpkins and I would much rather can than take up...
One other comment I will say about my SFH, I loved the combs on my girls. My hen with a crest had a beautiful little comb - sometimes combs and crests don't play together so well - like on the Cream Legbars - their combs can be large and floppy and it can mess up the crest and vice versa. My...
I'm loving your birds too! Especially the blue with the reddish neck! What a stunning combo of complementary colors on a bird. Similar to a blue copper Marans, but even nicer with the flowers!
You are top of my list if/when I get this breed again! DO you sell your snoleopards??? I would love a blue based SFH! Also, when you sell started pullets, have they been handled and are they still friendly?
ETA; ps that blue based girl in the top pic is gorgeous!!
