My Dominiques are laying sandpaper eggs?

OK, the Dom eggs taste fine (they both lay almost everyday), their shells are totally hard, but they are bumpy like rough sandpaper. Do other people have Dominiques or other breeds that lay rough eggs? My Cochin always lays super smooth eggs, the Doms shells are rough. Any thoughts? --Hugh

    Best egg layer breeds?

Here's the deal: Everyone say's how great GSL's and Leghorns are for laying an egg everyday. Breed charts also say how certain breeds lay everyday and some breeds only a few eggs a week. So, why do my 2 Dominques and Cochin lay an egg each everyday? Charts do not agree with this. Am I lucky...

Spring cleaning: How to clean out the run?

Today, I removed 8" of wood shavings (9 months worth) from the coop and replaced it with 3-4" of fresh clean shavings, that was too easy. Any tips on cleaning my 60 sq ft chicken run? I have a completely covered run with naturally sandy soil. Our horse manure rake will not work, so I am...

    Impacted crop surgery...we did it!

Dominique has had a impacted crop for a few weeks now, I decided this morning that we had to empty her crop by surgery. We tried (twice daily) 2-3 mL's of canola oil or mineral oil and crop massage for the past week, it helped, but it didn't resolve the issue. Today, we put a sock over...

    Chickens got a rat!

I was cleaning out the chicken run today and saw something that looked like a tree root sticking up and it turned out to be the rat's tail I thought about grabbing it with my hand and I am glad that I did not. I dug it up with my rake and it was a rat that was picked clean. Tail, fur and skin...

    Crow no mo'?

A friend of mine told me that if a rooster can not extend his neck, then he can't crow. So, I have an idea to build a rooster nighttime cage that will be roomy, just not tall enough for Little Ricky to get full neck extension to bust out his crow before he is let out in the morning. Little...

Good reading, but this BYC section is gross

My wife thought one of our chickens was deathly ill today, but it turned out that it just had it's eyes closed (those yellow eyelids are creepy looking) I rushed home today at lunchtime preparing myself to put an end to it's misery, I was so relieved to find out that it was OK. I have read...

    Mating pair?

Question #1: can brother and sister chickens be a mating pair? (I don't know if mine are from the same parents or not, but I would like to know the answer anyway). Question #2: Anybody hatching eggs from two "very different" breeds? Mine are Blue Cochin and Dominique - that seems like an awful...

Newbie chick owner with coop under construction

My 20 year old daughter bought her mom 4 chicks for Mother's Day. I told her in advance that the chickens needed to be "good looking chickens" (her mother's words). So, together they got two Blue Cochins (2.5 weeks today) and two Dominiques (4 weeks today). Another part of her Mother's day...
