Adding young (unexpected) rooster and 6 hens to existing flock

Thanks Silo. well, we don't have to worry about Elvis anymore ( guess I need to change my profile pic). He had to be rehomed because when I came home yesterday he had gotten Dolly again - and bad. Both her eyes are swollen shut, head is swollen, she looks awful. I cleaned her up, eye drops...

Hello again! So, I have "Elvis' a bantam rooster that is I guess around 1 year old. He just showed up one day and started this whole crazy chicken thing :) .. He has 3 hens, a cochin, a RIR cross and Spotted Sussex. They only sleep in coop - free range all day. Along side the run/coop are 6...

Introducing chicks to free range older hens

I wish I knew if Elvis would look after them; they have great hiding places, under two good sized porches is where they are if they are not foraging. Darn! I want so bad for them to be able to get out and about. When I do try this, am I correct in letting the olders out first, to go on thier...

Introducing chicks to free range older hens

So the chicks have been outside for a couple weeks now. I wrapped the crate to keep them dry and draft free, and they have a run right beside the older crew's run. The older crew pays them no mind. They are loving being outside, playing on a stump I left in for them. They are 7 and 6 weeks...

Introducing chicks to free range older hens

Your chicks look pretty happy! I was able to shake the cobwebs outta my head this weekend and figured out how to get them set up outside. We carried the crate to the pen I made, opened the door and there you have it - thier 'coop' and run - boy were they happy to be outside! I had so much fun...

Introducing chicks to free range older hens

Wow! Thanks for the suggestions and pictures! That helps allot. I will wrap them up tight to keep critters out. with regards to the size of the coop - the 6x4 does not include the nesting boxes - does that matter? Probably not, but I sure am trying to make it work :)

Introducing chicks to free range older hens

The run for the chicks uses the run of the older group, my back yard fence, which is no climb and the ends are chain link; I think I need to go around my backyard fence w/chicken wire, what about the chain link fence part? I do have netting over the top for them. Man, another coop - and I just...

    Pond for the girls?

I have an opportunity get pickup a 20 gallon 'pond' and was wondering if my girls even need it. I am new, and was thinking about the hot summers, wondering how they will cool themselves. They have plenty of shade and places for sand baths - will they need a pond? I am also concerned they...

I am wondering about introductions too; I have 8 chicks, 3 weeks old; 3 hens and 1 rooster around 1. I want to start putting them outside. Right now they are in a huge dog crate in the garage w/lights at night for sure. I was thinking about putting them in the crate beside the coop for the...

Another sick eye thread, and my first eye issue -to deal with

Thank you so much. She looks and acts a 'little' better this am. Her eye is still closed but not crusty and what looked like puss pockets under her eye are gone. I did warm compress last night and she was able to open it on her own, but really did not want to. I gave her fresh water, yogurt...

Another sick eye thread, and my first eye issue -to deal with

Hey everyone, My Dolly came up with a swollen, shut eye Sunday. I brought her in, used a warm compress to loosen the gunk so her eye would open. Washed her eye out w/vetracyn eye wash and vetracyn gel. Then off to Tractor Supply for Tylan. Got that in her eye two times yesterday and then...

What treat did your chickies get today?

Thanks! I sure don't want to encourage any bad behavior like that! Red meat is ok for them? I was worried it was not lean enough. When you give Tuna, for example - how much?

What treat did your chickies get today?

How often can you give treats? I leave pellets out all the time and am trying lots of different things. They love califlower, will pick at kale. I put the kale in a suet feeder, worked pretty good. They love grits for sure, yogurt, and were ok w/oatmeal. I am just not sure how much to give...

Hello ! I have been adopted by a rooster .... Updated 1/15 with pictures

Here are better pictures. He has descovered the front porch, so last night he perched up on a chair, facing the window looking in the house. Stayed there all night. let me walk out to him and take these pictures. This am, I held out a piece of bread, he ate it as I held it. He also drank from a...
