New decree from NC Agriculture Head requires registration of even one chicken with the State!

I'm in SC and I'm praying this doesn't bleed over to other states. This is just unfair because CptCluck is right, they will end up using this whole thing as a basis for making us pay double or triple what we already pay to raise and feed them. In tired of the government sticking their noses...

    Seed starting problems

Thank you so much for the advice. We are actually getting the garden tilled this weekend. I think I am just going to put everything in the ground. That is how I have always done it and never had these problems. I had just tried the seed starting because of the cold snaps but I agree with you I...

    Seed starting problems

Ok. I opened the greenhouse during the day. Idk what the temp inside was day or night. It was chilly at night and warm during the day with some variances. It's been weeks and some of the seeds were ones I had from last year, some were from online, some were old so I knew those may not come up...

    Seed starting problems

I am new to seed starting and I started three 72 well seed starting kits and NOT one came up. I put water in and had a little in the bottom pan and put the lid on that came with it and put in my little outside greenhouse. I got nothing, what did I do wrong??

    Broody Turkeys

I keep them at room temp. They will not start developing until they go in the bater or under the hen so collecting them until there's enough ensures they will all develop together. I think I'm just going to incubate this go round bc I'm not sure she will go broody since she's so young plus I'm...

    Broody Turkeys

Ok I just have the one hen and she's young still not yet a year old so I think I will just incubate them. I have kept them at room temp and turned every day so I'm hoping for the best :)

    Broody Turkeys

does that mean that turkey eggs stay fertile longer than chicken eggs? Bc they say up to 10 days for chickens and if a turkey lays every other day that would be almost a month! Lol

    Broody Turkeys

Thank you so much! That is helpful I might just incubate these when my chicks hatch out of the bater (I only have the one) I was hoping I could gather them and keep them in the house and by the time it warms a little I could put them back in her nest for her to sit on. Have you ever done that?

    Broody Turkeys

How many eggs will a hen usually lay before setting? My hen is laying about an egg every other day and I've been taking them in the house so they don't freeze. I'm turning them like I do my chicken eggs that I'm going to incubate but this is my first year with turkeys. I wanted to put them all...

    Egg question

Ok thanks. I just figured if I got enough to put out there all at once that she would naturally sit on them. Also I have heard that turkey eggs stay fertile longer because it takes so long for her to lay a good sized cluth to sit on. They lay an egg every other day till they have 15 or 20 then...

    Egg question

I have a pair of turkeys who will be a year this spring. They have recently been mating and the hen has laid some eggs. I have been gathering them as she lays them (about every other day) because of the cold and ice (I'm in SC) I'm trying to keep them in the house for her to hatch when there is...

    First time in lockdown

Could it be you are just seeing the different shades of the air cell and the rest of the egg? The air cell may look porous while the rest is darker. Maybe you can get a pic up :) that will help.

    First time in lockdown

All eggs are porous, some more than others (brown usually more) that is normal. Sometimes there can be uneven coloration like you've described. That could be from insufficient calcium just make sure your girls have layer feed (and free choice oyster shell offered separate) as their main source...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

that is a great illustration! Thank you. It made it very clear to understand. I am still learning and now I know. I've already been told my roo has a squirrel tail and that its a common bad trait in Marans. Too bad, he's so big and beautiful. I will most likely cull him and get a better one. I...
