Yes that is correct, the egg was completely empty! the cones are just falling to one side naturally but hers is just fallen and floppy.A few weeks ago she laid an egg which had a little albumin in it but the last one was just dry inside
Can anyone help with this please. I have a 3 year old hen who did not lay for 4 weeks, then laid an egg with nothing inside. Also her cone isn't standing up.
Oh Gale I forgot to mention we put Apple cider vinegar in the drinking water to reduce the alge and also it deters parasites from getting on the hens. You must be in the Northern hemisphere as we are just coming into Spring now
Gale, when the moulting begins they also begin growing new feathers. The protein output is so great that if you still want eggs you must feed them protein, as they cannot produce eggs and feathers at the same time. We fed our hens canned cat food and that solved the problem
Our girls are off the lay and have been for a week. I live in the sub tropics and we have had an unusual cold snap for a few weeks. 4 degrees celcius is cold for us. Thanks so much Sumi
TomandBarbara,
Thanks for your hint about the grapes. Red grapes are much higher in sugar and have more health properties than green ones so your chooks are very smart indeed, Cheers, Lucy
Oh yes I am sorry I didn't stipulate that. It is the wet tinned variety of cat food. They are both back to laying every day too. The brand they love the most is from Aldi. I am unsure where you live or what shops you have. I am on the Coast of Queensland off Bundaberg in Australia. Cheers, Lucy
Yes it seems that the Protien needed for growing new feathers after moulting is very high and it is likely hens will go off the lay as producing the high Protien eggs and growing feathers at once requires very high Protien food Cat food was one of those foods recommended it certainly worked as...
Well the information about moulting was very good indeed. We have fed our hens cat food every day for the past 2 weeks and they are both moulting and laying and the fine shells of the eggs have firmed up nicely. So thank you all for the great information
Thank you all for your welcoming messages. My husband was on the phone to our Son and I was cooking dinner and we left the door open, so what do you think the Hens did? They had a good look at where we lived while indoors. They are great girls and we love them. Lovely to have chicken lovers...
Hello,
I live at a beautiful seaside town in Queensland and we have 2 Austroplorp hens. They are now 18 months old, have gone off the lay and moulting like crazy. They live in a large pen by day and free range each afternoon for 2 hours. They have been great layers and are funny with their antics
