The Tale of the Miracle Chicken

Figured I'd update on how Helen's doing 6 months later. She's a healthy weight and our best layer. She started laying pretty soon after her recovery! I wouldn't have been surprised if Helen didn't lay for a few months, but she's been laying almost every day. She only just started slowing down...

The Tale of the Miracle Chicken

Nope, that's where she had to be. She was freaked out by the power tools used to trim the vine and flew over our fence, climbed under the vine to get back to our yard, and got stuck. It was foggy so there may have been some condensation. Even so, I think it's insane that she made it that long...

The Tale of the Miracle Chicken

Helen is recovering wonderfully. She was a little wobbly on her feet at first, but she can cruise around the deck now. We have to keep her fenced in, away from rest of the flock so they won't try to kill her. We chased them off and let her out earlier today so she could have a dirt bath. She has...

The Tale of the Miracle Chicken

Yeah, she's much lighter. It's not apparent because of her feathers but I can absolutely tell when I pick her up. Hope to get some meat back on her bones.

The Tale of the Miracle Chicken

This is Helen. 2 and a half weeks ago, our neighbor hired a man to trim the vine on the fence in our backyard. Later that evening, we couldn't find her come bedtime for our hens. We went out looking for her in the neighborhood and came up with nothing. Next morning, sane thing. She had been...

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

Well, we put her down a few months ago. Doing a Google search for an unrelated problem in some baby chicks came up with the diagnosis for my late Australorp. Crazy chick disease. Despite her being fully grown, she had all the symptoms. It's nice to know that there is a name for what happened to...

I think she's panting too, that's new. She's probably on her way out.

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

It's actually been going on for 2 weeks and she's still holding on. I've Googled ways to treat these kinds of symptoms so now I'm trying a heating pad in a box with a towel over it. I'm giving her water and yogurt. Here's a picture of her eye. It also has a blue sheen in certain lighting. It's a...

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

I gave her some yogurt by dipping her beak in it. She cooperates but still shows little interest in food. My family is torn between trying to get her through this and letting nature take its course. The way I see it, if she's still managing to eat and drink out of the feeders and walking around...

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

She's better in the late afternoons before bedtime, walking around with the other chickens. She ate and drank quite a bit today (still not nearly as much as normal). The sleeping is my biggest concern. Any ideas on what I can do about this?

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

I stuck her in a cage with some scrambled egg. She pecked it off the ground a little bit, but she's sleeping a LOT and doesn't show much interest. When I wake her up, she sometimes starts to look at the egg and falls asleep again immediately. She can't stay awake.

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

Thank you so much for sharing your experience with me. I'll try feeding her scrambled eggs and see if she gets some energy back. :)

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

I did, but I don't think that's it. Her eyes are just duller. It looks kind of like there's a white spot in one of her eyes in the sunlight, which made me think cataracts. The iris is the same color and the pupil is the same size and shape.

    Sight problem and constant sleeping

Hi, one of my chickens, a black Australorp, was sick at about 2 months old. We gave her some antibiotics which perked her up, and hasn't had any health issues since. She's about 11 months now, and a week and a half ago, we occasionally saw her nodding off during the day. We've put antibiotics...
