Pretty rooster I have some questions about some smokey hens and AR. First is a hen that's clean, no AR. Now a smokey hen with some AR. So, which hen is better? I feel these birds need some red in their back to get that mossy dark grey look. If all you have is white and black it looks...

Moving Forward- Breeding for Resistance to Marek's Disease

I have not had any losses this year. I dont want to wake the beast by saying his name, Marek's. Brought in 3 mature hens and a rooster. Raised 3 pullets who should be laying by now. Got a broody with 9 chicks at 1 week old. Even have a rooster who is creating a stressfull situation, but I...

She's got dark legs and a clean brest. Like to see her breast darken with age. I struggle with getting smokie hens looking right, and the roosters always look tall and leggy but the hens dont.

Not sure how a hatchery does it, but I would think they would want hundreds of eggs to start a breeding group to sell chicks. If it came privately I think people on this thread would know who it was. I think they got their stock from Ideal. At least Privet's birds are closer to IA Blue than...

Moving Forward- Breeding for Resistance to Marek's Disease

Another season of raising chicks has begun, and I wanted to update my Marek's situation. I got 14 chicks in March, three weeks in I had lost 2 and had another one that was going lame. Falling back onto its hocks, just the same thing I delt with all last year. I started the birds on B12...

Moving Forward- Breeding for Resistance to Marek's Disease

I am 100% sure about the breeder I got the chicks from. I dont think the chicks were infected until they got to my property. The thing I dont understand is feed store chicks, chicks under a broody, adult birds no problems. Then wham, just confusing. The way different lines of the same breed...

Moving Forward- Breeding for Resistance to Marek's Disease

I thought about posting this in a seperate thread, but I suspect Maerk's and thought I would post it where Maerk's experts are. I hope I can be short but comprehensive. I have had chickens about 6 years. Initially I had coyote problems which were hard to figure out. The beast would take 1 a...

    I have Mareks...so now what?

I am also having issues with Mareks in my flock. It takes a couple, then I think its under control then it pops back up again. Frustrating, but theres always something with chickens. I have read a lot on Mareks and I am not sure how much I know about it. It seems sooner or later a flock...

She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Anybody want to try talking me out of hatching pullet eggs? Girls and boys about 6.5 months. Been laying for a week, then I started collecting. Its not ideal, but winter is coming. Like to hear from anyone with experience in a situation like this.

Thought I would share. I really like the way this guy is turning out. He is becoming protective of his hens at around 5 months, and just developing a personality. A silver. He also must attack this guy about every other day. He is backup. I feel I could have made a better choice, but...
