Odd Place to Lay an Egg

We are starting anew after a move to another state and now back to CA. We now have seven layers and a rooster. Five of the hens are Red Stars, one looks to be Americauna and the other is anyones guess but she lays green eggs so I'd suppose an EE. She is raven black. The rooster is also...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Quote: Heat? No, but I do have light. One flourscent lamp on a photocell with a timer. Comes on at dusk and turns off after three hours. Truth be known, it's more for me so I can go in and close things up without tripping on anything and the three hour time is so I don't feel a need to live on...

My dream-come-true! Our new resin shed coop.

Quote: You may have to shoo them into the new coop for a couple of days but closing up or removing the old coop from the area should help that. For light control put in a timer so the light comes on at dusk and turns off after some time. I have mine set to three hours.

To hang or not to hang....

IMHO it very much depends on the space you have for your chickens. If there is limited space, sure go ahead and hang them so there's some bit of additional floor space. The thing with that is you can seldom raise them high enough for the birds to be under there comfortably and still be able to...

    Greedy Little Pig......

Because we take the girls some treats above and beyond their normal lay mash and scratch (we use a lot of wild bird seed or that) they've become quite greedy. Usually if there's a girl or two in the nesting boxes they will stay there. Yesterday I took in some left over hamburger buns with sesame...

    Best Brown Egg Layer

If you get RIRs from good laying stock rather than show type stock they will lay 250 to 300 eggs per year, and for more than just a year or two.

Looks like the Buffs are starting to lay.

Quote: Somewhere over 24 weeks. I have trouble remembering but it's a least a month after the first egg for the RIRs which was at about 20 weeks.

Looks like the Buffs are starting to lay.

Today we had our first four egg day with one of the eggs a different color. It was much lighter than the eggs we get from the RIRs, with an almost pinkish hue. Since I know at least one of the RIRs is laying large eggs and laid one yesterday, the lighter colored egg has to be from one of the...

When do Buff Orpingtons start laying?

We have three at about 24 weeks with none laying yet though just a couple of hours ago I heard one heck of a commotion out there. It sounded like something was getting killed and even the dogs got upset. When I went out to see what in the world was going on I saw two of the Buffs in the coop...

    First full size egg!

Today we were the recipients of the first full sized egg from the girls that are laying. I would guess this is from the pullet who started first just about a month ago. I believe we have all four RIRs laying and get two to three eggs a day now, not bad at all for new layers. We're still waiting...

Be honest, how often do you...

two to three times since we have new layers and three yet to start. So far the ones who have started are pretty good with the nesting boxes with only three full?complete eggs and one sans the shell, out of the boxes. Once all the girls are laying the checking will probably settle on twice a day.

    Rooster aggression

Quote: Way too many roosters for the number of hens. IMHO. That many will likely over breed the hens and could do some damage. Should be about 10 to 1 or even a bit sparser. Yes, I agree. We are building pens now to start seperating in groups. They have just come into breeding and some of the...
