    The Old Folks Home

At 73 I believe I am amoung the oldest here. Birthdays fly by with no more attention than any other day. It is those odd moments of realization that smack me in the face. Or seeing a friend when she has not "put herself together" and is showing her age.

I remember the "carriage return". Learned to type on a manual, then used a fast electric. Then so many years of no typing, then computers - the nightmare computers. touch the wrong key and weird things can and do happen. Or, touch the correct key and wonderous things can happen. The very best...

@perchie.girl at first I didn't know what "BIG space" you were refering to until I went back and read my post again. All I will say is that this computer is driving me crazy. At least I can post, for now. No sign of those cute emotion thingies though. If there is a big space in this post, I...

A knock on the door - neighbor tells me my ducks are out in the ditch a block away..... What to do? Step #1 in retrieving wayward critters is food in a bucket. So, I head in the direction they are in the car. Yep, eight Ancona ducks are having a blast in the water filled ditch, catching bugs...

It looks like my computer will let me post - I have tried several times the last few days, Still dealing with *signal* issues, DD bid on, and won a computer at work and gave it to me. It seems to have a mind of its own...

Opps didn't mean for it to post. Now I get to decide what to do with these little fuzzy butts. Probably give the chicks to one hen and the rest of the eggs to the other. And get the incubator out for "just in case". And it will get filled with duck and goose eggs that are piling up. I might as...

While I have been trying to decide if I want to set up the incubator, a couple of hens started to hatch some eggs. I knew some were developing, with different hatch dates. So, now hen #1 has one hatched (yellow), one pipped big and one tiny pip. Several more coming along. Hen #2, one black, one...

should i cull and start over?

Doesn't sound like she's too sick. Maybe she has something stuck in her nose? your call, I would probably just watch her and the others, look for any mold they might be able to get into, and get them moved as soon as possible.

should i cull and start over?

What is the ventilation in the coop? There needs to be good air exchange. Mold is a killer. What kind of litter do you use? Someone else needs to answer your question about using bleach. I used Duramycyn 10 when my geese got into mold under dead grass clumps one wet spring. It saved the sick...

should i cull and start over?

A dog carrier works well to put one chicken in. Maybe put it in the garage? I hope you get it figured out quick and it is not serious. If she does die or others start getting sick, I agree that getting tests done so you know what you are dealing with is important. You will know what meds are...

Poultry and plants: I have watched my flock as they pick and choose the weeds here. What they eat, I let grow and the others I try to get rid of. A man aked permission to put a couple of horses in the pasture last spring. Knowing there was only enough grass for a couple of months, I enjoyed...

should i cull and start over?

Do I understand correctly that you only have one sick hen? Isolate her away from the other birds and treat her. If the new birds have lived there over winter, they should have shown signs of sickness before this. I had a pullet start acting like she had a cold, I used VetRX on her and she is...

I survived by doing day care and sewing. My best friend was a teacher. Both of us were around lots of kids. As the years went by, we both saw a trend of more behavior problems. And health issues. Why? We could speculate - all the junk added to food, bad food choices, bad parenting? I do have my...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

This is my current subject to figure out. A family of barn swallows has been making a nest in my barn each summer for years. They are so fun to watch. I just don't know how much risk they really could be to my poultry. I can easily block their way in, just would hate to do it if it's unnecessary.

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

Oh, since I am trespassing here, I thought I would add, from the little I know about it, Frank Reese has farmers that raise poultry for him so not all of his birds are on his property. If the flu or any disease showed up, it would be horrible, but he would have some genetics to start again...

BREEDING FOR PRODUCTION...EGGS AND OR MEAT.

I happened on to this thread. I am always looking for info on the avian flu. You mentioned an outbreak close to Frank Reese. I assume and hope you are referring to the one in Leavenworth Co. and not one I don't know about. I heard on the radio this morning that they hope to lift that quarantine...

A couple of counties in Ks now have some areas quarantined because of the avian flu. Why is it showing up in the turkey flocks that are being raised in buildings?

Wow, and to think all those years of sewing, when I needed to know what the circumference of a circle was, I just figured - a little over three times the diamater.
