Please give advice: a neighbor simply throws laying mash onto the ground of his chicken pen and the chickens scratch around for it and eat it up. He has eliminated his trough and feeder and it looks like his method works. Are there drawbacks to this? I would like to copy if not.
That sounds like a great idea. You could use other type of seeds as well, things that chickens like and are good for them. You could actually make an inexpensive greenhouse out of clear poly sheeting and strips of ripped old lumber, grow grass, purslane, mustard greens, comfrey, under it, then...
