It seems too late in the season for babies, and I can't think of any other reason for one to be so aggressive except illness.
Oh we're definitely taking extra care now, the chickies are safe in their coops, and we've been going out in pairs and carrying a shovel when we take the dogs out. They...
Seems possible, it wasn't foaming at the mouth or turning in circles, but chasing people more than a few feet just doesn't seem normal for a groundhog. Tried calling animal control but there was no answer - probably closed for the weekend. Fingers crossed that it minds its own business until Monday.
So, anybody ever have a problem with a groundhog trying to get at their chickens?
Because I sure had an interesting experience today, when a groundhog repeatedly ran at my coops, trying to get at the girls through the wire. Then when I thought I'd just startle it off, the little monster ran at...
Update: Well, I thought I would update this once more. Haven't seen much, if any, progress. Still can't seem to get herself upright/moving forward. Just kind of propels herself backward, or falls forward and ends up on her back. Got her a vet appointment almost an hour away for later this...
Update 10:00pm- Well, she's still in chicken hospital. Waited seven days from the Wazine and then dewormed her with Eprinex pour-on, 0.5 mL. She still has an appetite, though less for the applesauce/yogurt/eggs/anything I offer her, and more for her own food. She's drinking well, better than...
Update 5:00pm- Just passed a stool with several enormous roundworms in it. There were a couple protruding from her vent as well. Gross. So obviously worms are either causing or contributing to the problem. I guess I need to decide whether to just continue with the Duramycin, or treat a little...
Have been alternating Wazine and the Duramycin-10 for about 24 hours now, so I'm going to stop the Wazine. I've been going in and letting her out of the carrier, prompting her to eat and drink every couple of hours throughout the day.
I wish I could say that there was much, or any, improvement...
I think that either she picked them out or the other girls did. I upped her protein intake in case she was eating the feathers as an additional protein source. I dont see any lice or nits on her anymore. Her vent looks normal, no discharge or crawlies around it.
I can run out and get some...
Update!
Just got this poo out of her. First time there has been any unusual discoloration - does that look like possible coccidiosis redness to anyone? Also, first time I've seen anything long and wormlike?? Can anyone offer any insight as to what I might be looking at here?
So my splash marans girl is worrying me quite a bit. A few weeks ago I found lice and nits on her. Dusted her with permethrin a few times, and it seems like this problem has resolved - don't see anymore crawlies. But last week I started to see her standing in the run looking a little puffed up...
Oh yeah, I did add a packet of chick saver to the water as well. Will dig through the medicine cabinet for some antibiotic cream sans pain relief.
It's the ataxia that has me most worried, it's disconcerting to watch. But at least she's still trying to get around. I'll pop over to the...
Ok guys, I need some advice. So my splash marans girl is worrying me quite a bit. A few weeks ago I found lice and nits on her. Dusted her with permethrin a few times, and it seems like this problem has resolved - don't see anymore crawlies. But last week I started to see her standing in the run...
I am so with you. Last year of nursing school started this week. Talk about hitting the ground running, I've got back to back med calc exams and clinical starts Monday. I live with my dad (we lost my mom two years ago, and being here while I go to school is the best way I can help out) and he...
As long as you've got a mealworm container to shake, and he's been out for awhile, he should come running to the sound. That's how I'd been recalling him since the brooder. :D Good luck!
If you do decide to give it a snip, I wonder if you could use a bit of styptic powder (like you would use on a dogs nail cut too short) to speed up the clotting process. Flour will do in a pinch, if you don't have styptic powder.
Hmmm. I will think about it, I have space for a couple more chickens, but probably not enough to be breeding for things. Not just yet, anyway. Someday.

Right, that's what I figured - that chicks raised in the brooder and handled more would generally end up more tame/friendly. Once the eggs hatch, could you hypothetically take the chicks and pop them in the brooder? Or would the hen lose her marbles over such a thing? I guess they...
