My EEs loose their beards every year about this time...by late fall they are in full molt and in winter all the feathers come back including their beards and muffs.
I got my order of 12 chicks back in March, 2 of them Ameracaunas/EE. At day 3 or 4 I noticed one of them was really aggressive to the point that I named her Attila the Hen. Well, she turned out to be Attila the Him. Although he doesn't seem to be overly mean, he definitely is still aggressive...
I have Speckled Sussex, Welsummers, Black Australorps and Delawares...all are quiet and relatively friendly. I also have some very noisy Easter Eggers and a Rhode Island Red.
I have 2 Rouen ducklings and 11 chicks that have all been together since day one. They all hang out together and freak out if someone is missing. TOO Cute. They were 5 weeks old yesterday .
I had a little one (2-day old speckled sussex) doing the same thing about 4 weeks ago. I kept it cleaned off and applied a little preparation H to the red area for a few days. She is doing really well...a little smaller than the rest, but very healthy and no more problems.
I hope things will be okay...I have been adding parakeet grit to the chick starter because the chicks and a couple of ducklings were eating some of the shavings as well as their food. Thought they might need it to help digest the wood.
I placed my order with Ideal last Friday for 12 pullets: 2 Ameraucanas (Easter Eggers), 2 Black Australorps, 2 Delawares, 2 Speckled Sussex, 2 Welsummers and 2 Gold Sex Links. They have a shipping date of March 10. This is my first ever order. The chickens I have now were given to me by a...
Pet waste: chicken owners should be held to the same standards are dog owners. Chicken poop 1000 times a day. Manure sinks.
Although chickens do seem to poop a lot, they do NOT poop 1,000 times per day. And, I agree that dog poo smells way worse than chicken poop.
I was having similar issues with standard 12-inch by 12-inch nest boxes with straw on the bottom. The hens didn't have enough room. I switched to using jumbo sized covered cat litter boxes with straw on the bottom and have not had anymore squished eggs unless the shell is really, really thin.
