I live in south Louisiana and have thought about sand also. My only concern is that in the heat of summer the sand would get very hot. Don't have much shade in the run; has this been a problem for anybody
If I'm not mistaken it has as much nutritional value as corn; especially brown rice. I live on southwest Louisiana and the birds flock around rice elevators to eat the spilled rice. Dose not seem to harm them but was wondering about poultry
Yes I have kept mixed breed flocks off and for years. now have a small flock of 2 RIR hens 1 silver laced wyandote hen, 1 mixed breed hen, 1 white rock hen, and 1 white rock rooster.The white rocks are the only ones appear to be anywhere near the breed standard,though certainly not show quality.

I have a mixed breed flock of five hens and a white rock rooster. Would like to hatch some good egg layers to add to the flock. How can I determine which of my hens are the best layers so their eggs can be hatched.
I don't know if it is the best method but it works fine for me. I use pellets and feed in a packed dirt area with no waste. Thats how all the framers feed their ckickens when I was growing up in the fifties.
