cowcreekgeek, thank you for posting the references. It looks like they are from the same one you sent me last week (sorry I never got back to you to thank you for it before), which I have printed out and am reading through. According to that paper, quite a bit is known about pain perception in...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I am with you on this. We have people on another ongoing thread right now who think chickens do not feel pain. Infuriating. I think I'm gonna lose it, the next time I see people saying vivisection on chickens is okay because they don't suffer. Stupidity might not kill the world, but it sure...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

This is why, if/when my own hens slow down for winter, I am perfectly willing to pay up to $7 for a dozen eggs laid by hens that I know live in clean, spacious conditions that are allowed to express natural instincts and have meaningful access to good outdoor forage (at least for most of year)...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Same here!!! And I am also amazed at how they communicate with each other, the way there seems to be little friendships among them that are not always in line with a peck order (e.g., a bottom dweller befriends a dominant hen and sticks by her side for protection, if another tries to bully)...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Exactly. I don't know of any backyard chicken keepers that debeak. It's done when they're "cage free" but crammed together at high density in a barn. It looks like this: http://wvfarm2u.files.wordpress.com/2012/06/cage-free.jpg Disgusting, yes, but perhaps better than this...

    Awful bumblefoot surgery

Yes, and one that doesn't get enough attention is soaking with TricideNeo. I've treated only 3 cases of bumblefoot. All with TricideNeo. All healed entirely, with no recurrence. I've read posts on other threads that says TricideNeo works only on the mildest cases, where there is a small scab...

    my pet chicken reviews

I actually think this is quite reasonable. A lot of people might suspect a male at younger than 10 wks, but it turns out to be female after all. It's also reasonable to have an upper limit, so there is a time after which the hatchery's end of the deal has been fulfilled. Otherwise people...

    my pet chicken reviews

Of course. It's hard for me to imagine anyone expecting a hatchery to do anything more than give a refund. It is abundantly clear that there is a risk of getting roosters, so if one is not prepared to deal with that possible outcome, one should not order chicks.

    Frostbite!

If there was pus, it is already infected and vaseline will not help it. You will need to clean it and apply a topical antibiotic. Did you ever measure the humidity level inside the coop?

    my pet chicken reviews

Hmm, that is odd. They say on their website that they refund sexing errors in full, if more than 10% of them were sexed incorrectly, as long as you report them within a specific time frame after ordering: http://www.mypetchicken.com/about-our-company/policy/return-policy.aspx (scroll down to...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Some people keep the chickens for fun and companionship, and feed the eggs back to the hens. I'm not saying this is what I do (I eat the eggs), but it is another way of thinking, not necessarily "dumb". People in other parts of the world think we are dumb for not eating dogs.

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

Perhaps for the same reason most of us don't eat our cats and dogs. For some people it would be like eating a loved one.

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

These are not really back yard farms, but the few surviving family farms that have been in our area for generations. They are of a very different sort than the young rock star farmer with a degree in agriculture or resource management, or the backyard "farmer" who keeps a small flock for fun...

Dumbest Things People Have Said About Your Chickens/Eggs/Meat

I now charge $5/dozen as well. The going rate for locally produced eggs around here is $3 - $7 a dozen. The lower end is eggs from chickens confined in barns but not in little cages. These birds may be debeaked. The higher end is for eggs from chickens who really have meaningful access to...

    Coyotes took ALL MY HENS!

I am sorry for your loss. I would start over, but I would not depend on just the netting for night time protection. They need to be physically locked up at night. It really is not that difficult to keep a coop free of holes/spaces that will admit anything bigger than a weasel.

    Frostbite!

Thank you for the compliment, cowcreekgeek, perhaps I will contact Henderson! I would like to say more about the chicken's reaction to pain, and if I can find the time, I will PM you rather than continue here, because I think that debate is going far beyond what the OP is looking for.

    Just had a stoat attack!

Johnn, I understand your desire to give your chickens a good life, a chance to express their natural behaviors. But the reality is that protection is also necessary if you want to keep chickens long term. Providing both freedom and protection is a difficult balancing act, something many of us...

    Frostbite!

Yes on relationship between vascularity of the tissue and vulnerability to frostbite. I alluded to this in the AK/frostbite thread. Henderson's rating of cold hardiness does not take into consideration vulnerability of comb to frostbite. This is easy to see because he says certain because he...
