Where is the best place to buy my first chicks?

This is year 2 with chickens for us. We ordered with friends from a hatchery last year, and this year we got pullets from TSC. I'm interested to see how the new ones do. As far as picking breeds, you will want to look for a few things. 1: Do you want just eggs? 2: Do you want white, brown...

    Why less eggs than normal?

Thank you for the responses! We found out what was going on... We cooped them for a few days and got all of our eggs... So I investigated. They had been laying under the coop! The daytime temps were averaging 85-95 and humid at the time, so I guess the coop was to warm (even with the doors...

    Chicken leaves and returns, normal?

Our coop is 6x8, with 4 nest boxes, and 4- 6ft roosting poles, and a chicken door into a small run (we are getting ready to build a big run for the winter) and a total of 9 hens. I am pretty sure she is at the bottom of the pecking order, but she has always slept in the coop with the others...

    Chicken leaves and returns, normal?

Hi! This is our first year with chickens. We live on a large farm, and we free range during the day. Last week, I noticed one of our chickens were missing at lock up time. Though for sure she had been taken by a predator. 4 days later, I look out and there she is! Totally fine and grazing...

    Why less eggs than normal?

We have 9 hens, and at least 6 are laying. They are 25 weeks old. We had been getting 5-6 eggs a day... And in the last week we have only been getting 4. I did notice that we has a shell less egg (messy!) in one of the nesting boxes, and a soft shell on our front porch. (2 different days). I...

    Still wondering about this RIR

Here is another pic, 12 weeks old, of our RIR (or possibly a production red?) we are still wondering if it's a pullet or cockerel. It hasn't crowed at all (we have another one that started crowing 2 weeks ago) and its tail is short. what do you think?

    What are Your Chickens Named?

Theo, I love the names you have, as well as the names everyone has posted! We got our flock at the beginning of March this year. It was nightly dinner discussion on what to call these chicks. Between my 5 and 8 year olds, my husband and myself, we would all agree on a name before it was set...

    Speckled Sussex? Wyandottes?

What makes you think cockerel? I'm new to this, we do have a confirmed RIR cockerel, and I was wondering about the WCBP being one as well. Thank you all for the input!

Your RIR looks like ours. We believe it is a rooster too. Looks so similar! So are they about 8-9 weeks?

A few extras.. Who/what are they?

In our shipment of chicks, we ended up with some extras. The brown/white ones, the black and white with the lighter head, (the black and white spotted are my barred rocks) and the one with crazy fro. I think the crazy fro may be a roo too. Please help me identify!

10 weeks old.. Roo or hen?

Hello! We have this Rhode Island red that we are beginning to think might be a rooster. It is larger (body and legs) than our other red, and has a large red comb (the other one is light and small) and is getting a little more feisty. Do y'all think the same? We are not sure what to do since...
