When can I put the babies in with the big girls?

I have 9, 4 week old babies. I have a large coop and run with 4, 1 year old pullets. Directly next to it I have a smaller coop and run. I am planning to let the babies in the smaller run during the days and bring them in at night for the next week or so, as it's still in the 50's at night and...

    Chicks in the coop-questions

I guess I would say pullets, rather than chicks? Mine are about 9 weeks and have been out in the coop for a couple weeks. I have two questions, the first, is about roosting. They all sleep together in one nest box. What do I do? They are of course completely feathered and it hasn't gotten down...

    So confused.....

I bought a pre made coop, the bungalow, from my pet chicken. What a crock, no way 6 chickens could live in there. But we are using if for now while the pullets are still growing. Right now I have a 10x10 chain link fence with netting around and over it. (Lucky to live on an island with very...

    Chicks out in rain?

So glad to find this post. I was just going to ask. My girls are 6 weeks and 2 days. They have been living out in their coop, no heat, for almost a week. When it started to drizzle I went out put two in the coop and the others followed, but didn't stay in for long. When the rain got harder they...

    Food Grade Diatomaceous Earth

I like to chime in on these DE posts, sorry if it's getting old! DE kills bees. Everyone knows what a problem the honey bees are having. So, I wonder why you would introduce it to your yard? It's a fine dust that will land on flowers etc out of your run, and if a bee comes in contact with it...

How long do they need the brooder?

My chicks are 5.5 weeks old too and are not fully feathered. We are 60-70 in the day and we move them outside to their run all day, but bring them in at night. I want to turn off the lamp at night for a while to get them used to the temp, and the dark. It's been in the mid 40s at night. Can they...

    White Leghorns bonding

I have a rir, 2 buff Orpingtons and 2 leghorns . Out of the 5 my 2 leghorns are by far the most friendly, which I find odd as I thought the Orpingtons would be the most friendly. None of them like being picked up but my leghorns are the fastest to settle and snuggle up. First time chicken mom...

Is DE safe to mix with our chicken's dust bath?

DE kills bees. I'm new to chickens and am researching like crazy about all the options for runs, coops, dust baths etc. We also keep bees on our property and I'm trying to find a solution to help with mites etc with the chickens, but I'm not going to have a dusty material flying all over our...

    Wood Ash and DE questions

I was reading a thread that had mention of wood ash and DE. Wondering what you do with them. We have a wood stove, would LOVE to doing something purposeful with all that ash. Also, I read somewhere that DE was bad for bees. If so, why would anyone use it? Thanks in advance for any info.

Anyone use SAND in the run/coop

This is a long thread and I've tried to read it all but.... I'm very interested in sand. Going to use a mix of sand and sweet ptz in the whole coop (except nesting boxes of course). But a few questions. Wood ash. I saw some comments but not an original post. What do you do with it? We have...

Comment by 'Ackchickens' in article 'My6chicks's Chicken Coop'

Hi! I love your large coop, and we have decided we want to copy it and build one for ourselves. Any additional plans or info you have would be greatly appreciated. I have 5 chicks that are going to be BIG (RIR, orpingtons and leghorns). I already know I want to add to the flock next spring. How...

Building a new coop and want to get it right. A few questions

Thanks for the info. Literally no other predators besides dogs, I know we are lucky. There are hawks and owls but eagles are rare. And like I said we will net the top. Our coop and run is hidden from the street in a back corner of the yard so I don't think they'll be easily visible. We are...

Building a new coop and want to get it right. A few questions

I totally screwed up. We closed on our new house in January and knew I wanted chickens. We have half an acre and we are allowed to have them in our neighborhood. I went to a website, and bought a pre-made coop and 6 chicks the same day, very little research. As I ordered so late in March for...
