Do you mind if I naively ask what could possibly make that beautiful one in the pic not show quality? I understand a color not being an accepted color, but she is a beautiful white! What else would make them only pet quality?
My dishwasher incubator has now hatched over 1000 Black and Blue Copper Marans eggs since it was built.

Can you post pics? I have no clue where to start but saw your post a few years ago with the basics and some pics may help :)
They can be both. I have heard they are supposed to be a bit more docile..but I had a white roo that was both aggressive and loud. However, the benefit is that they are little...and can't fly, so you won't have him coming at your eyes if he does get aggressive. :)
Michael,
What about a partridge pair...now that I have a partridge cockerel that I wasn't expecting...do they throw a pretty consistent color? I think I may keep three for now.... the Gray, Partridge and Blue. They are the three that are the best quality...my black really is not attractive...
I may be in denial, but I have 13 other silkies this same age with specific gender differences. Up until a week ago I thought this was a hen. This bird carries itself like a hen, has a big round poof like my hens...until these wattles showed up and this small comb. The comb is 1/4 the size of...
If I keep a black, to go with my black hen, what other color is most versatile? I am guessing not a buff...unless I keep pairs.
For instance, can a gray be successfully bred to a white or a black to produce show colors?
I'm hoping to cover as many as possible with the other roo I keep.
I think maybe this should be a list of 'what not to bother with'....such as the upside down waterer's that tend to leak more than they hold water....
Its hard to know about your nesting boxes until you know your flock. Mine did not appreciate small nesting boxes...they like a bottom drawer of...
Hello All,
I have read many a post but would like a recommendation from someone who understands this better than I. I only would like to keep two roos in my flock...(I also have golden comet hens)....What would be the most optimal color of Roos to keep for breeding purposes?
I have...
Try waiting for a silkie! I had to wait 10 months for my first silkie egg and then she went quite a while without producing another! We get daily eggs now though ;)
If you cant have roosters I would definitely gove back unelss they can show you DNA testing etc. While it could still be a hen...there are too many rooster characteristics that make it umcomfortable to believe its a hen
Thats a tough one! I wouldnt be too convinced unless you get a crow...is it your only silkie? I dont see waddles amd while I do see a small comb it still isnt a clear indication. Do you habe a side pic to see if there are any streamers?
I had a silkie roo that attacked my husband everyday once he reached maturity. Soon after he started attacking me and wouldnt let me in coop door without a fight. We had to put him down unfortunately. We dont tolerate mean roosters....to much risk with having little ones around.
