I just want to mention that when they refer to "quiet" breeds, I think that they mean quiet temperment. Australorps are wonderful, I have two. I don't personally have an Australorp rooster, but I know someone who had one that lived for fifteen years and he was very smart and gentle and very much...
I say pullet!! You can't look at the tail feathers that early. My pullet had the exact same tail, and the juvenile feathers fell out, and now they are all coming in rounded. Everything about your pullet looks girly to me. Easter eggers develop differently, I have one with a wide comb. I think...
Just out of interest, look at the Cream Legbar. It is a British sex-linked hybrid. It doesn't look much like your rooster, but it has a similar crest. It is a hybrid composed of Brown Leghorn, Barred Rock and some Araucana. I think it worth mentioning to show how crests can show up not...
I agree! She looks a lot like your Hyline Pullet. (GardeNerd, I remember reading about how you and your daughter hatched her from a Trader Joe's egg...what a amazing story!!)
You wouldn't happen to be in Canada, would you? If so, she could be a White Chantecler. If not, she really looks like a white leghorn with a small comb (to me, anyway...I'm no expert!) Very beautiful girl!

That interesting about the tastebuds. I was wondering about that since they can't really enjoy what their eating since they pretty much swallow it and it doesn't stay for very long in their mouth. I guess a strong sense of smell would make up for that.
What a beautiful story...I had tears in my eyes while reading your first post. I've often dreamed of doing something like that. If I ever live on a big chunk of land, I will! They look beautiful now, now they can finally start living and not just surviving!
I would love an organic section! I am interested in permaculture and on other forums I have found have very sporadic info specific to chickens.
I think the assumption that there is no room here at BYC for that type of discussion is way off. Organic is gaining steam across America and vegetable...
So soo sorry...I know how hard that is. Making that decision is so hard, but I think you did the right thing by her. I'm sure that once you give Zipper some extra attention, you all will feel better soon.
If she is still eating and drinking then I would give her a bit more time. Maybe a splint would help. If you can't afford a vet to treat the injury, then maybe a local wildlife rehabilitator could help splint the leg if you explain your predicament. Maybe try craigslist. Often knowledgeable...
I think it's a great idea!! Those poor things NEED people like you! Even if a few don't survive, at least they will get some peace and love in their final moments. And you won't just be building a coop, you will be building a sanctuary.
We have a composter called an Earth Machine for our kitchen scraps. It works great and we don't even stir it very often. We put most of our kitchen scraps in there (cooked and uncooked) and cover it with leaves or weeds. I drink a lot of coffee so I am always putting coffee grounds and coffee...
