    Mixing chicks

yes it is fine to mix npip certified chicks together. Sometimes egg layers don't play nice, but CX should be okay

    First Batch of Meat birds

How many do you have? Can you add on to the brooder? Most likely, they can survive the temps better after the third week, but will suffocate each other trying to stay warm no matter the age. Cornish are known for piling up and suffocating each other. Especially with a heat lamp and temps under...

    What kind?

If you are starting in the spring, you can go with any breed that tickles your fancy. As long as you have it before the end of May, you should end up with a 20lb bird. If you go with a broad breasted, think about what size turkey you want and order accordingly. Buying a BB in June will result...

    Burbon Red

That is silly. We bought 20 BBW this year, received one bonus. Bought during the hottest part of the year, had several freezes and a hurricane before butcher. Only lost one! Last year we lost zero. And ours free range since 4 weeks, so they definitely experienced all of the weather...

Just Completed 1st Slaughter Day -- Now I have questions!

Glad you enjoyed it! Meat birds are my favorite, and we are a little funny farm with a 3 year old boy too!

The Conundrum of Selling Meat Birds

Yup! Same here in NC, I was all "please tell me of the 92 certifications I need" and they were like "please stop emailing us" actually, they were really helpful, but basically told me to do what I want and "keep records just in case"......I don't know who is ever going to find/check said records...

The Conundrum of Selling Meat Birds

I'm just a little confused. Alabama allows processing under the federal exemption for growers up to 1000 or 20000 birds on farm. So why can't you sell by processed weight? Calling the processing a service doesn't matter under PPIA. For the extras, I would bag them separately and not charge...

    Free ranging meat birds

It depends on a lot of factors. We fully free range our CX but put them in a tractor at NIGHT and open the door during the day. We move the tractor every day, so that is why we don't have one area that is worn out. We also limit feed to two (sometimes three) meals a day, what the can clean up...

    Butchering Chicken questions

Every chicken I have processed usually has that clear bubble thing. It has an official name that I can't remember right now, but it's normal. It has a crazy texture and I would say it is very possible even though you were popping it, that it was resealing and filling back up with water.

Not Sure If You've Got A Pullet Or Cockerel? Click Here! Thread 2

Blue Cochin 3.5 months old (14-15 weeks or so?) I have hope! Haha. We have a second one almost identical except the tail points up instead of making a little rump like this one.

    Hatchery choice?

I've bought every meat bird available from McMurray (Pioneer, chef, Red Ranger, Cornish X), they have great healthy chicks, and honestly the Cornish X was my favorite!

What type of meat birds for self sufficiency.

HAHAHA, I was censored! Who knew you couldn't say "dang"

What type of meat birds for self sufficiency.

Is that so horrible? I think lots of people are looking to have more input into HOW their food is raised, without giving up vacations, tons of money, and doing hours of farm chores a day. This gets more off topic from OP, so I will keep it short. We free range (tractors are just used to coop at...

A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

. Thanks! Well we couldn't fit any of them in our oven or XL deep fryer last year. So "skinny" is relative for this year. Im not worried about size, just them getting dry in the oven without any fat.

A century of Turkey talk 2000-2100.

Hi! This is my first post in this thread, I think I royally messed up on my turkey order this year. We have 20 BBW coming next week, they will be about 13 weeks old by Thanksgiving. NOW of course, I remember they are supposed to be 22 weeks old to get a layer of fat under the skin.... Literally...

Broke the intestine while processing. Help

HAHA. I know right? But you would be amazed at the things I have heard people ask in real life!!! Actually, you probably wouldn't be! I tell people that when selling eggs too, we don't wash them...I expect you to cook them and practice safe refrigeration habits for your gourmet hollandaise and...

Broke the intestine while processing. Help

I'm a couple days late, but you can keep a spray bottle of vinegar, spritz the chicken where affected, let sit, and then rinse before putting on ice. That is advice we got from our state inspection agency. In extreme cases for our own chicken we have also used food safe watered down bleach and...

    A butchering question

If you miss that first shot...well....they aren't completely stupid. It's very hard to get in the second one. I would also be ready with your "back up method" in case you miss and hit them in the body instead of the head...it's not too nice to leave them half alive & wounded while your...

What type of meat birds for self sufficiency.

I read everything twice before I posted and OP didn't say that outright and I thought I wrote my post in a nice way. Sorry if I offended. I was also making a point about time input, and that it is nice to have a break and work with the seasons.

New to turkeys. Why does a turkey gobble?

free time for acting stupid is cracking me up! Last year we had 3 boys and one girl, and the biggest turkey lost his fight on a Tuesday morning that I will never forget! His whole head was...ummmm heavily destroyed, and he had lost so much blood he just let us pick him up (well "just" might be...
