    Infrequent Egg Layer

I have a 23 week old chicken that has begun laying eggs. I don't know what type of chicken she is, but she looks like a standard white chicken that lays white eggs. She's on layer feed and has a light in the coop. All day long she has free range over the yard. My question is: Why does she...

Where did that first egg go?

I just got my first egg today and I haven't decided what I'm going to do with it. Mostly I'm going to eat it, but I'm trying to figure out how to celebrate the occasion. Any thoughts?

Is free ranging nutrishous enough for a growing hen?

I have three girls at 12 weeks who love to free range the yard. They have food and water in the coop, but I seldom see them in there. They also don't sleep in the coop so they aren't directly next to their food when they wake up. Are they going to mature slower and take longer to produce eggs...

    BO chick with HUGE comb

I have two Buff Orpington chicks that are three weeks old. One of them looks slightly different and has a huge comb compared to any other chick that I had/have. Does any one know if this is standard for a BO, did I get the switch a roo, or could he/she be ill? I will have a pic posted later...

One chicken in flock roosts in tree. Why?

So, I have three chickens about 9 weeks old. When it's time to go to bed, two of the chickens walk right into the coop and the third flys into a tree. The roosting chicken sits on a tree branch slightly above/near the coop. I clipped the wing of the chicken, but she/he's crafty and make a...

How big is a chick's crop supposed to be?

I have chicks between one and two weeks old. This morning I felt two of the Barred Rock's crop and it was about 1" in diameter. The other chicks were smaller then a marble? What's the normal size for a crop and at what point do I consider this an emergency? Thanks!

    What are these little guys

A few weeks ago I received three chickens from a woman at work. She claimed that they are RIR, one a rooster and the other two are hens. Can anyone verify this? This woman didn't seem to be a chicken aficionado, but then again, neither am I. Right now they are about seven weeks old with the...

    Bad DE, bad!

This is my first post on BYC, as I have just started raising my flock and I need to learning a lot. My question concerns the health of my chickens in a round about way. It's summer time, which means hot temps and swimming. My pool's filter is the kind that takes Diatomaceous Earth (DE), the...
