We use those with our Coturnix quail as well as all our chickens. The best nipple waterers IMHO. Also great in colder weather as no water is stored in the nipple as its not like a ball valve holding the water back such as the vertical ones.
Also didn't see much about feed on here. You will want a gamebird starter crumble from hatch through adult hood. Maintain a protein level of 26 to 30 percent. They need a higher protein than other poultry because of their fast growing and crazy egg production.
Thats what we finally did. Cages within the shed/coop. We used poop boards underneath and that made cleaning fairly easy. Sounds like you're fairly set up already. Go for it!!
They are fun to hatch. Not much cuter than quail chicks. Also a very easy bird to hatch. If you try it and hate it, incubators are easy to sell and its not like you'll have a shed size coop and run to tear down...
I would also add to raise them in a secure hutch style enclosure with half inch hardware cloth to stay disease free and safe. Also makes egg collection easier because they lay whenever the time hits and keep right on walking. no need for nesting boxes or such. Just a container for dust baths is...
I would say you couldn't go wrong with getting an incubator and hatching your own. would even out, or even be cheaper in the long run. Hatcheries seem to hate shipping quail chicks because the mortality rate is usually high. Such a small chick just cant survive as long like a chicken or duck can...
that sounds great! thanks for the reply. Our cat is well fed and a great mouser. I have caught him once when he moved the lid and crawled in a big brooder with quail chicks. didn't touch em lol he just wanted to lay in the bedding. I dunno why he loves to catch the adult quail escapees, but the...
So we've got the chicken bug and have decided to build another chicken run and convert our shed into another chicken house. We would like to start a bantam flock of hens in our current coop and attached run 10x25 with 7 foot fencing around it except for one side which is my house, and wire...
I usually do some golden layers every year from JMF. They are a pretty color variety of coturnix, and lay a pretty, almost marbled egg. I like those as well as the JMF jumbos. both lay an XL quail egg and can be feather sexed which is a bonus. The Golden layers are a good layer as well.
I don't think he answers on weekends but keep trying through the week. He is a busy man but will do everything in his power to take care of you. We have bought quite a few eggs from JMF and he has awesome stock. As far as availability, you will have to talk to him. I know he has been sold out of...
Does anyone have any adult or sub adult coturnix hens for sale in Colorado or Utah? looking to add to our laying flock and have chicks hatching in a week and a half, but are looking for some mature birds now. I don't mind driving to meet someone. Any offers or info would be great! thanks!!
congrats on the elk tag! I am a avid hunter and professional taxidermist from northwest Colorado. What time during the fall is the tag good for? Is the unit a dificult one to draw? What is the country you will be hunting like? cedars, pine, mountainous, rimrock? Archery or Rifle?
Answering these...
leave it to a chickenHow are your runners? seems like I have read mixed reviews on their laying and personalities. Some people seem to say they're great and others say they're pretty skittish. Also, beautiful pup you got. We have two merle Great Danes that will be sharing some backyard with our...
those are awesome pics, thank you. what kind of ducks do you have? do they lay in the house at all? You say you hose the duck house out every day, do you use any bedding in there?
Howdy team. So we've been bitten by the duck bug, and are finally giving in. I've been doing a ton of research and snooping on here andI'm trying to decide how I want to go about my design. We are thinking around four ducks, mainly for eggs but friendly as well. still can't make up our minds on...
I do love the green and blue eggs, but I like the look of fresh brown eggs as well. I'm not too picky other than white. that just takes some of the fun out of fresh eggs!
I live in northwestern Colorado so we do get some cold winters and some hot summers. I agree, it would be wise to have the coop and run up and going before I start raising chicks.
Hey all, new member to BYC but have searched the sight for several months doing research. My wife and I have been looking into ducks and chickens for quite some time now and I think we have finally settled on chickens for now. We are looking to get four to six hens and I really like the smaller...
