My hen has had a strange hiccup/cough for about 4 days. The best way to describe it is a hiccup. One day prior she has some clear liquid coming out of her nostrils but it has not been moist since then. It's almost as if she has something caught in her throat, but being new to chicken...
She laid an egg yesterday but it was virtually WHITE (she is a brown egg layer)! So I was a bit shocked. It was very rough too. She did not lay today so she must be getting things back in order before she lays again.
Hope she is okay. Glad to see that she is not laying any more internal...
Hello.
We have a pest beetle that decends on us each spring called a Rose Chafer Beetle. They eat our raspberries, grapes, flowers (Iris, Peonies, etc). We don't like to spray because of the bees that are trying to pollinate our raspberry blossoms. They also go after our apples on the trees...
Update: My hen is doing better. Hasn't laid a shell-less egg since Friday. She hasn't laid an egg at all, but I figure she is healing. Thinking she had an "inflamed oviduct"? She loved the Pedialyte and yogurt. Have been giving them shells for calcium.
She is back in the coop with the...
I have to dust my birds also for mites. Looking for information on using DE vs. Sevin. When I bathed my chicken last week (thought she was eggbound), I used a tiny bit of Tee Tree Shampoo to see if it would help the mites. There were some dead in the water. Will be dusting each of them and...
She has laid two more "no shell" eggs this afternoon. I did bathe her thinking she might be eggbound. She rather liked it. I have her in a dog crate in the garage by herself. Also wondering if she may have an impacted (compacted?) crop. It is as hard as a rock and she has not eaten since...
Thank you! It WAS an egg membrane from what I can tell. As I went back out to check on her, it eliminated itself and consisted of egg white and a soft shell membrane. I gave her a look and she was not prolapsed, however, today she is standing with her eyes closing and not hangin' with the...
Hello. Have a chicken with a milky white sack hanging from the vent area. It appears mucous-like with no blood. Have looked at many posts to find info on this without success. Is this part of what prolapse is? She went through a strange thing about a week ago where she was lethargic and...
Andora,
Feeling very sad about your chicken. Hopefully today or tomorrow you will get some answers from the swabs. You seem very attentive to your chickens and I am sure you did everything possible to prevent her death. Hoping your week gets easier and you find comfort in the answers from the...
Thanks for all of your comments....I think we will stick with our plan for 3 windows. I like the plexiglass idea for winter and the plastic covering on the outside is a good option too. Happy chickens, happy chicken owner
Thanks, everyone. I am putting the saw dust in the compost pile instead! It will be equally useful there.
Appreciate the replies! So glad I didn't use it.....

I am in the process of building our chicken coop. We are planning to put 3 windows in. One on the South, one on the West, and one on the north side. For any reason is this too many? I am wondering about too much light for the chickens...they are not double paned windows so the north one will...
This is the sweetest little coop! Wish I had done that instead of trying to learn how to build one...lots of headache for a novice builder. Your chickens are probably as cute as the coop!
Hello Everyone!
I live in Port Hope in Michigan's thumb. New to the forum and new to chickens. I love my four little chickens. I suspect one may be a rooster, however.....hmmm.....had to rely on the girl at the feed store to pick out hens for me....oops, I think she might have picked out a...
A friend gave me some saw dust from untreated wood for the coop floor. Is there any reason not to use saw dust? I see others have used wood shavings and wood chips for the floor. Wondering if the fine dust would be a health concern if they inhale it.
