I hit send before I was ready. I am beginning to think it is feather picking. We dusted for mites/lice a few months back and have seen none. This seems to have started since winter. I am not able to let them out to free range as much because I work and there is only about an hour of daylight...
I have 28 hens. For the first time ever I have two hens that have gone broody. A Buff Orpington that has been broody for about 2 weeks and now an Easter Egger has joined her. What can I do to discourage this behavior?
I have several chickens that are losing their feather below their vent as pictured below. Some also have a bald spot on top just before the tail feathers. They all act fine and are laying well. I have no idea what is causing it. The hens range from 1.5 years old to less than a year. Please...
Our hen has been like this for two days. I have soaked her in warm water twice and massaged her vent. Today I actually stuck my finger in her vent but couldn't feel an egg. She is still eating and pooping. Suggestions??
The Barred Rocks are a little younger than the Buffs and Australorps, this a little smaller. They came from a different place than the others and were kept in a separate coop til recently. The Buffs, Austrlorps and Leghorns have all been together for months and been fine. It wasn't until I had...

I have 5 Barred Rocks, 4 Buff Orpingtons, 3 Leghorns and 2 Black Australorps. The Barred Rocks have been living in a different run than the other birds. They are seperated by fence so they can see one another and they also all free range together some each day. My husband built them an...
I have 2 ducks and 14 chickens. They are kept in different coops but do free range together several hours each day. I have been wondering what sex my ducks are and after reading on this forum, I believe I have two males. Is that a problem? Should I have a female if I am not breeding? Will...
I am a newbie so take what I say with a grain of salt, we don't wash our eggs and do not refrigerate them. We do not have air conditioning in our home either. That being said, I haven't had a dirty egg yet but when I get one I will wash it.
