I've recently been feeding a hen back up after I left her with family for 10 days and came back to find her with gapeworm, a severe throat infection and in a state of emaciation & dehydration
She was treated for the worms and infection with Noromectin and Baytril, and that cleared up fine...
I have 3 chickens (2 banties, one large) and I find that I go through one 20kg (44lbs) bag every 6 weeks or so. Each bag costs £7.85 ($13.10), which means I spend around 6p, or 10c per day per chicken on food.
The city farm I work on uses it for pigs (they love it!). It comes wet, and has to be used up moderately quickly, but any that doesn't get used up can be composted. I would imagine that it could be used for other animals, although we don't.
We get it donated, although I'm not sure if this is...
Here you just have to tell them your name and address, and they check it against a list of those eligible to vote. There's been more evidence here of fraud via postal ballots than by voting in person.
I do!
I fly sailplanes, and I went solo (was allowed to fly alone) just under a year ago. Nobody ever seems to know what it is, so if you want to see what it is then this is a good video on it http://blog.tellallmyfriends.com/tag/glider/
I also volunteer on a city farm (basically a farm /...
Something similar happened where I live - a young Muslim convert from a respectable family (father was a doctor) with a history of heroin addiction was planning to blow up the town centre. He lived 4 houses away from someone I know, and they had to carry out a controlled explosion.
However, I...
Nope, but I do fly full-size gliders (sailplanes) There are also some RC people who fly their planes off the end of one runway, but I have to admit that I don't know much about it.
I have found that (with moderate / severe scaly leg mite), the mites will go (as evidenced by a new chicken being in there fore > 1 year but not getting them), but the scales will stay raised.
In other words, it's very difficult to tell.

Yes, I do. My garden is about 100-120 ft long, and 20-30 ft wide. The hens live in an enclosed coop and run on one side of the garden, about 10ft from the bottom. I've never had any complaints about them, and the previous neighbours said they really quite liked having them there.
They...
That's brilliant, thanks.
Just to add one thing - Ukadex. It's a French product that I found online, and it stops pecking immediately (you may or may not class this sort of thing as an emergency). You only need a small amount (and therefore it lasts a long time), but I found it to be nothing...

Nr Bristol, England. Thanks very much for the offer though Have you got a link to the mega chicken first aid kit?
Just to update you guys, I took her to the vet today (a specialist farm animal vet - was very impressed compared to past experiences with small animal vets!!)

Be thankful the US government doesn't want to introduce ID cards for humans with biometric data on them.
My own opinion is that agriculture has managed fine for millennia without NAIS and therefore it is not 'essential' as the gov would like to claim.

Apparently it's due to the heat in there - the combs expand to help lose heat. When they are in more normal condition, the combs return to a more natural size, feathers regrow and eggs get to free-range standard.
*bump*
Any more advice / opinion? I'm not planning on removing the 'plug' of infection myself - I know my limits and performing minor surgery using household implements with no anaesthesia or formal medical training is beyond those limits. If I do that, I'll be an amateur surgeon.
PS I used to...
Also- any thoughts on this subject would also be interesting to hear. How could you start an organization like that... and would it even be worth it- would the companies just buy new hens? Or perhaps would it be saving the hens from a short-lived life...?
You could start it by liaising with...
