    My options for quail housing...

The chickens are in a different area, different coop entirely so I should be OK. I actually am getting ready to thin my breeding stock for rabbits so I might have a 4 hole hutch to use with 1/2" wire almost everywhere (one section would need to be replaced).

    My options for quail housing...

I have had chickens for a few years now (6? I guess?), added rabbits in a few months ago, but would like an alternate meat source so I am thinking quail. I despise processing chickens, but quail (I have been told) are far easier, and youtube makes it appear that way as well. Anyway, thinking...

    A bantam of some sort??

OK, pictures not working for some reason... never had that issue before. Hmmm.... Fluffy butts running from the monster camera - can you spot the odd ball guinea? Best pic I could get of the wiggly little guy (I am assuming "guy" based on the fact that I read that in feather footed...

    A bantam of some sort??

I had some broodys who were too restless to hatch any eggs (kept switching nests) so I was able to buy the last few chicks at Southern States... all the lady could tell me was that they were bantams of some sort (which I had already figured out at that point (oh, and a lone guinea that she...

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

My BLRWs have been the absolute hardest for me to sex... I have no idea why! With my first trio I kept going back and forth and at one point had convinced myself they were all cockerels. Thankfully I was wrong and had a nice trio of 1 cockerel and 2 pullets. Even now, I have some crosses from...

    Changing Roosting Habits?

I have 10 four month old BA's that have decided to roost anywhere but in the coop - on top of it, on top of the coop next to it, in the trees, on the door, etc. This just started last week or so with one or two, now all 10 have migrated there with them. Two even started roosting in the coop next...

    slightly expired bread??

I've never gotten into the specifics of feed percentages or tried to make my own, but what I think about with that scenario is the additives in the bread. There are a LOT of other ingredients usually, except in a very small percentage of sold breads (b/c of the shelf life side of things) that...

    Blue Laced Red Wyandotte THREAD!

Is this the "cape" that I have seen referenced to for cockerels a few times? Mine are around 15 weeks old and I'm still trying to figure out what I have! All 3 together. I know the pics are horrible, it was dusk as they were coming in from their first free range adventure - they didn't...

    Future Chicken owners

Coops - We repurposed an old shed into a coop that has worked well, but the placement isn't great. We made a hoop coop last year which has served its purpose and have plans to build something bigger and more functional using pallets, hopefully over the winter. Feed - Our local feed and seed...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

With all the talk of "biosecurity" an all, how often do you bring in birds from an outside flock? Swaps and auctions seem popular, but it's been something I have been leery about since getting chickens - pretty much I have only gotten them from one feed store that doesn't have access for people...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Crazy about those lightbulbs! I wouldn't want that in my home either!! It's hard not to be paranoid and leery about anything you buy anymore... sheesh! But it did remind of another random question. Snakes have been out biggest predator issue (so far , we have other things, but they have never...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I was hoping to get to at least 10-15 birds this year for layers for next year, then just start adding a few each year to keep the flock going (a broody would make that so easy!)... and here I am with 3 (I looked at those BLRW again tonight and they sure are looking red up top. I'm not holding...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Bee - thanks for all the input! We can pretty much do what we darn please where we live. We have two acres - one half of which will soon be a rental property. We are surrounded by family pasture and hay fields though so we're not really limited on free range space - oddly enough they never cross...

Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

I would take anything at this point!! I'm so bummed to be at this point with my flock - not at all what I had in mind when I planned everything out for the year. Only slightly frustrating... Too bad you're not at least within driving distance - that might be too tempting!
