Hi Everyone;
My favourite girl has been sitting way too long on a full nest. I can see some eggs that look of developed. But it's been almost two months. It's her first time and she made a nest that got a bit of rain and cold. She is so devoted. I feel sad for her. I wonder if I should just...
I imagine perhaps a strafoam based wood raft anchored to cinderblocks with a couple of nylon or rotproof ropes perhaps a dog igloo on it and some porch space. Maybe use that fake plastic deck wood, though it's heavy and may force thicker styrafoam. Perhaps a hinged attached entry ramp. Though...
Thankfully baby looking much better this morning. Thank you!
Very hard to find non medicated. Will check again today at feed store for a chick starter without meds. Only turkey crumble available in the past. And will ask for chick grit.
I was under the impression from my reading and speaking with breeders that Muscovies had a very high protein requirement compared to chickens and other ducks?
Just did a little reading about grit and mentions oyster shell. Do have that available for momma. But kinda big pieces hard to imagine the baby eating any. I could grind some up for her or I have sand too, should I put either of those in the water or feed? Or?
Must have been what happened to poor Mimi. She was in pen with her sister-who as I mentioned is perfectly fine and they did always have more food than they needed.
Have not given chick grit. I have Momma and baby in pen together. (Brood Momma - egg laid at other farm)
I have been feeding for both once a day:
1/2 cup wild bird seed
1/4 cup duck weed in water
I feed romaine lettuce too but baby can't bite that yet. She does love the duck weed.
Did add...
I haven't changed anything feed wise. Why would it swell now? And why did only one of the two ducklings last year have this and died and the other is perfectly fine?
Okay, here is a picture of the one that passed last year from same farm. As you can see much less swollen. Took her a few weeks she was just more and more tired seeming and one day fell asleep and never woke up. I suspect a GI blockage, but can't know that. Just the what it seems like the food...
Please help if you can. Swollen throat in duckling. Last year I had two ducklings mailed to me. One slowly died starting with this same mysterious throat enlargement.
I had my duck sit some eggs mailed from the same farm this year and only got this one hatched, who has been perfectly healthy...

Won't allow to copy any text. So can't easily post an excerpt. It is only one page on Muscovies. It appears to be a book quite aptly titled. I was surprised to see that the researcher/author noted that Muscovies were more often kept for meat and fat and less for eggs in the tropical Americas. I...
I am trying to find a good place to share this link on the history and geographic distribution of Muscovies. This seemed kind of close to a good spot : )
It is from a Google Book called "The Cambridge World History of Food, Volume 1" page 560. Africa is mentioned...
