I have a sand/dirt mix in my run and it works really well. when it rain it stays wet for a day but it doesn't get muddy. And for the most part it stays off the chickens. Plus they can eat it for grit.

ya because alot of my pullets do that and they are 8 weeks old with barely any comb

I would have got turkens because they look funny and are good layers but they didn't have them at their hatchery
