    Algae in the water

I was thinking about the bleach idea but didn't know how much to put in. It's a 5 gal water cooler, and I looked online and couldn't fine any suggestions of what might be a safe amount. The nibbler is clear plastic and that's the only part that shows algae, none inside the cooler. I guess I...

    Leave her be !

Fantastic Information, and thanks to all. Some of the things that I've done in preparation appear to be correct. And I also see where I need to do a few things still before the chicks arrive. This certainly has been a learning experience and I'm sure more is to come. Again, thanks to the great...

    Leave her be !

I have a hen who has been brooding for just over two weeks now, sitting on several eggs. Before, the other three hens all chose the same nest. I've isolated the broody hen/nest from the others, but still in the same location inside the hen house. The other hens are obsessed with trying to get to...

9 new chicks with mom, Can I put them in a coop with a ramp?

Thanks for the great advice CTKen. By my records, something should be happening by this Sat/Sun. I can move her nest to the floor of the hen house by then. I'm hoping the other hens and roosters don't interfere when she takes them outside, into the coop. Thanks again.

9 new chicks with mom, Can I put them in a coop with a ramp?

I'm reading this post and I'm in a like situation. My hen should hatch some eggs in the next couple days. Currently, her nest is probably around 36" above the hen house floor. Should I wait til the chicks hatch and move her to the floor within a day or so? I built an extension (shelf like) floor...

First time trying to hatch-more questions

I candled three eggs my hen has been sitting on for seven days. I can't tell what's going on. On day seven I could only see a dark circle (yolk looking) inside each of the three eggs. Can I add some eggs to her nest that have been laid a week later? At what point should I pull out the original...

    Hen raising Chicks

Thanks for the information Ok, more questions: I've been thinking of separating the nesting hen from the others by dividing the house which would make it about 3.5ft by 7 ft. Does that sound ok. Then should I move the hen/nest to the floor, because it is now about 30" above the floor. After the...

    Hen raising Chicks

So the question is, should I let my hen sit and hatch the egg, or remove it and use an incubator. I'm pretty sure she is sitting on more than one egg. The other eggs are from different hens. Is that ok? My 5 hens use the same nest, will the others move to another nest? Today is Oct. 22nd and...

Who else is waiting for that first egg?

I have two Bard Rock & two silver laced Wyandotte, and one speckled Sussex (very slow), just under 6 mos. old. For a couple weeks now I've been getting 4 eggs a day. Eggs are still small to medium in size. I don't think the Sussex is laying but I can't be sure. She just doesn't seem right...

    What's happening?

I don't quite understand, the hens laid their first eggs the 26th of July the 28th and the 31st. Nothing since then. I have five hens, two roosters. Feed them table scraps and layer food. The temp has cooled down a little (80-90). They are about 21 weeks old..too young maybe? Any thoughts ?

    New Guy

The coop has a preditor proof chicken run, but I try to let them out to 'free range' in the evening. I stay with them til they retire inside...except one time I had to go in the house for about 90 min. I came back out and found the chicken had been attacked.

    New Guy

I am new to this site and I'll be having questions as time goes by. I'm also new to raising chickens. I started off building a coop from a picture in a magazine. It turned out to be a much bigger coop than the actual coop in the magazine. I raised eight checks and there now about 10 weeks old...
