The waiting is the hardest part. Thank you for your help and encouragement, it has made me feel better through this process! We will keep a close eye on her -- she and her sisters missed each other for sure! They are such good little ladies :-)
Here is Miss Peggy this am, back outside with her sisters. We started her out in a pen on the grass and she was acting totally normal, and definitely wanted to be with her sisters. I dosed her with the antibiotic one more time, and here they are enjoying a good dust bath. Made two big...
And another development...I grabbed her to lube up her vent and she let out a big chicken fart, very stinky, and immediately started walking around and scratching her towel with sawdust on it. Could she be backed up? No sort of egg in her crate. Just another big healthy poop from some point...
That would be wonderful if that's what it was. I still worry about that strangely presented egg a couple of nights ago. She talks a bit and will stand when I bring her out of the cage for a bit, but she still seems uncomfortable. I have continued the meds and calcium. She eats her pellet...
She does not feel at all swollen to me. This morning her comb is bright. She is eating. Got her liquid calcium. She stood up and stretched her wings a couple of times, is talking a bit to the chicks in the brooder in the basement with her.
Here is Peg this morning. I was able to bag her...
Peg really hasn't improved, but I don't think she has necessarily gotten worse. She had a bit of an appetite a couple of times. Ate grapes and some feed soaked in dissolved tums. She has a container of D 10 water, and I also administered as much as she would drink with a syringe tonight. She...
That's what I was thinking too. The poop is what's throwing me. If she is it's wet, but we don't have many droppings going on. The electrolytes must have kicked in because her comb is redder as perkier again. Preened a bit. Started her on some D-10 too. Also gave her some dissolved tums, figured...
Peg still isn't quite right. She had received a second spa treatment late afternoon yesterday, and honestly after that perked back up, ate and drank on her own then hung with the flock for a bit. Come bed time she and another hen (who never sleep in the nesting boxes) were tucked away in there...
She is still resting comfortably it seems, I will try putting her back out this evening if she is still content and see how she does. I have some electrolyte mixed in for her, will give the rest of the flock some too.
Thanks!!
Before I took care of the horses Peggy was back in the box early this morning. Our girls usually lay around 10-11am. I could tell she was straining so I figured I would give her some time to work on it herself. I came back and she was still in there and relaxed. The photo is of the egg that was...
Tonight at bed time I walked in to see one of my hens in a nesting box, and our girls have always roosted, so I was immediately concerned. On further inspection, I found and gently removed what appeared to be a very poorly formed rubber egg from her vent. It was completely exposed and just a...
Is my BR a pullet or cockerel?
Hello all! I am new to the forum and chicken ownership - I currently have 3 buffs and 2 barred rocks. However, I am thinking one of my BR is male. I have found an awesome home for him, but want to be positive before I send him off!
Top few photos...
