    Mama Red and the cats...

My two cats play rough when they're outside. Today, Mama Red, intervened in what she thought was a fight between the cats. It was hilarious. The cats immediately separated and deferred to my dominant hen. The rest of the afternoon she refereed.

Dangit, a hawk just got my banty rooster...

I'm going to miss my little Doodle. He was noisy and a pain in the a** but I loved that guy. Now my girls are cowering in my art studio and I can't get them out. I guess I'll leave them there for awhile until they calm down. Is it possible to cook the rooster? It couldn't have happened but a...

    Chickens eating/playing with rodents

Our cats often catch voles and mice on our property. Today I found one of my hens (they are free range in every sense of the word) pecking at a dead vole. I immediately tossed it far away, but was wondering if this was cause for concern.

    Let my girls inside today...

Just cuz...") They have a certain time of day where they hunker around our front door. Today was very cold so I let them in by the woodstove for about 20min. They seemed to enjoy it, though my hubby was dubious!

    Egg in my pocket

I had a large flannel shirt on today, as it's so cold, to gather my eggs and then go shopping. I put one in a breast pocket, forgot about it, and did my shopping in town with egg in tow! It survived all day. I laughed out loud this afternoon as my Mama Red's egg traveled to town and back!

We are in the beginnings of homesteading. I would really like to raise fowl for meat but can't get over killing my birds. Yes, I buy and eat meat from the grocery store. I would like to be eating what I raise due to the many benefits. Do any of you have any suggestions? I tend to have too...

I'm having such a good time blowing my eggs and decorating them for Christmas ornaments! I have an Easter egger with lovely blue-green eggs, a couple of others that lay dark and light brown eggs and a banty that lays little dainty eggs. Thank you chickens for some extra presents to my friends...

    funky egg

Hey everyone! I've been around for awhile but don't post very much. One of my hens produced an egg with a bumpy top end. I feed them layer feed and oyster shells as well as home made mash. They free range all over our mountain, but go to their coop at night. We've been lucky as they have a...

    My first dozen eggs!!!

I'm so excited! I haven't wanted to eat any until the box was full. I now have a dozen eggs and giggled when I went to the grocery store yesterday, bypassing the egg section. This is so much fun and I love, love, love my girls!

    Hello fellow chicken lovers!

Moving to a new coop. Really need advice! I'm new here.

I used to have 13 chickens, but they are now down to 5 due to a very small crack in our coop. I was devastated. I now call my chickens in at night (7:30) and they sleep in a large pet crate. We have built a brand new coop, but it several yards away from the house where they like to hang out...
