I have several cats - no rodent problem at all. Then again, my chickens will kill any mice, lizard, frog, or small snake that they find. My sweet girls can be vicious murderers.
For me with my two hatches I did drop the temp of the incubator 1 degree to 99.5 on round 2 and get more pullets. However, the first batch of eggs were shipped in from a location where temps were zero to 10 degrees for highs for several weeks before and after I received the eggs so I was...
This year I incubated 2 different sets of eggs. The first only 4 out of 15 were pullets. The second only 1 out of 8 was a rooster. Never will I be that lucky again as I was on the second hatching.
I have about 40 hens and 3 roosters and 1 young Ayam Cemani rooster up for adoption.
Year 1 - Just want 4 Barred Rocks for fresh eggs. Year 2 - Silver Laced Wyandottes are so pretty, friend is raising some, I will take 3 - New total 7. Year 3 - Ordered a variety from hatchery - New Total 17. Year 4 - Hens hatched babies, picked up a few from local breeders - New Total 29...
Hi, Does anyone know of a Vet in SC that decrows roosters? I purchase 12 day old pullets but one has surprised me by being a roo. I really like him and he is so sweet but my neighbors are going to flip when he starts to crow. He is 10 weeks old now. I don't want to give him up if I can help it...
I feed my Barred Rock hens Purina Layena with the Oyster Strong System. They lay beautiful large brown eggs. The shells are definitely thicker than what you would find in a grocery store. The yolk is a richer darker color and they taste amazing. Sometimes I actually have to try twice to crack an...
My Oyster Strong TM System Eggs are as strong as this klutz needs them to be.
I have dropped eggs on the ground and knocked eggs on the egg box and never had a broken egg. I even gave a few old rotten eggs to someone to throw somewhere and they complained because they bounced and didn't bust.
I have only fed my chickens Purina Food since I got them and they are beautiful and healthy so I guess they like the food very much. I have it in a feeder but I put some on the ground too with a little bit of the Purina Scratch Grains.
I do not really have a "coop". I have a 400 Sq Ft Run with Sleeping quarters and egg laying area. The little pen in the picture with the bag is a pen for my three 8 week old girls to have their own Purina food and a place to rest.
I tell my girls "Thank You!" too!! And I tell them they are doing such a good job and how pretty they are. I talk to them all the time. I give them an extra little treat (veggies, fruit, or something) while I am collecting eggs. Just a little thank you for their "labor".
One of my hold outs must have known that I was talking about her because she started laying yesterday. The girls are consistant though they lay 5-6 eggs each per week. When my first girl started laying and I would collect the egg, I felt like that person/thing "Gollum" from Lord of the Rings...
Update: Another one started laying at 24 weeks. Now just two more to go. They are now 25 weeks old. I have started calling the two hold outs "chicken salad" and "chicken pot pie". Could never do that to them though.
I have 4 barred rocks. They are currently 22 weeks old. 1 has been laying since 19.5 weeks. Quite regularly. She takes a day or two off per week. Her eggs are all smaller but are getting larger with time. The other 3 have red faces, combs, and wattles so I hope they join in soon. My hen that...
