I have done it a couple times for quail. This will let it more light and the chick will by instinct move towards it. It's better if you try, I don't know if the chick is even healthy from that first enitial crack. Let me know
You could make a Small crack in the egg to help the chick out. It's most likely weak and that's why it would need help. Or if you don't mind culling it, that's an option. The candle wax also may have re unforced the shell
The shell is made with calcium, a few soft shells here and there are fine, but a constant production is do to a lack of calcium, which could hurt the chickens over time.
The hens could be done laying exactly like hokum pointed out (that could be the most educated reason.) A rooster will only make your eggs fertile which is actually good to hatch more egg layers since yours are retiring.
I have a fully covered run with bottom fencing to keep out digging prey. A timed motor will work great to make a auto matic door. But you will need a decent sized run.
