Cull her to the egg out, or let nature take its course. to keep birds, you can't see them as a pet.

The hens could be done laying exactly like hokum pointed out (that could be the most educated reason.) A rooster will only make your eggs fertile which is actually good to hatch more egg layers since yours are retiring.

I have a fully covered run with bottom fencing to keep out digging prey. A timed motor will work great to make a auto matic door. But you will need a decent sized run.

The chicken breed itself is all in all docile. So any other breed will have a moderate demand over it. Rooster by the looks though.
